The match is finally here. We play Saturday at 6PM. Goofy and Mike are playing that day too. I would suggest noonish.

Goofy and I are playing around 12:30. We can play downstairs. It doesn't need to be filmed.

If you start at 12:30 you can play it up stairs. I can't imagine it taking 5 1/2 hours like Niki and I did.

We don't have the scores for the 4 set between me and Andrew. What do we do? That set was not recorded on UStream or in Air Hockey world.

This was incredibly brutal 5 1/2 hour match that at times could have gone either way. Out of the gate, I felt very relaxed. I was not feeling like my typical anxious self before a match. I hadn't played a challenge match in a long time. After a few months of working with Ramiro on my defense and adapting my game to a soft high top... for the first time in a long time, I was comfortable at the table. I even had a bit of a game plan.

Fortunately the game plan was mostly working. One huge problem we were both having was the right wall banks were just not sticking. This is a huge element of my game. The best I was able to do all night was a crisp medium speed RWU. I did the best I could to adapt the situation and took down the first set comfortably.

The second set was a crucial win. In the 7th game, Donovan had the lead at 6-4... then 6-5... then 6-6... a few intense possessions each and I squeaked in a crisp left wall under to close out the set.

Perhaps a little confident at this point... and perhaps a little tired, Donovan keyed in on a few soft spots in my defense and took the next two sets.

At this point, it was a new match. Tied up at 2 sets each. I was tired, particularly my legs were cramping up. But I was definitely nowhere close to finished. I still had plenty of energy if I kept things under control. I decided to go back to my original game plan and stick to what was working. The most crucial element to me winning this match was definitely my improved, steady and disciplined defense.

Huge thanks to Ramiro for helping me to break down my game and rebuild it from scratch. We still have a long way to go!

Thanks to Donovan for accepting the match and working with my schedule. Thanks to my wife Niki for reffing the entire 5.5 hour battle... and to Mike Cummings for coming back to manage the webcast and scorekeeping!

Impressive victory for Andrew in this long grueling contest. Congratulations. From your description of the match, I felt the intensity and the great deal of effort and thinking and fighting that went into the struggle.

Clearly, Donovan gathered himself after the first two sets, and rallied to win two in a row. AFter four hard sets, he had to be somewhat tired, and then you surged to finish the deed before it got out of hand.

Did not know you had been practicing with Ramiro; on Thursdays?

I am sure that Donovan learned from playing you, and the next time you both meet, it will still be a hard fight.

Phil

I put in all 7-6's for now, and we can fix it if the results are found.

Congrats!
