Illinois State Tournament - 5/10/2008 (1 comment)
Goran Mitic wins the 2008 Illinois State tournament, followed by Geoff Oidtman in 2nd and Sean Fried in 3rd. All the state's top active players showed up to play with the exception of "semi-active" Mark Robbins. The surprise of the day was Mike Murphy who came from nowhere to defeat both Kris Beck and Pat Gill along the way to a 4th place finish. Prior to Saturday's cooling, Kris Beck and Pat Gill had been two of the hottest up and coming players in Illinois. Full results to be posted shortly.

As far as the tournament went i found it to be quite dissapointing, this has nothing to do with my poor finish in it. Only a year before at the 2007 tournament, my first, we had almost the full participation of everyone in the top 20 of the mitic rating. With the addition of all the players we have picked up in the last year i was expecting a much larger turnout. Other then that we needed better lighting over the tables as it was very frustrating to play in the dim environment provided.
When all is said and done, i like our new players, but i really wanted to face off again against the old given the experience i have picked up over the last year
