Looks like an epic battle is brewing.

Maybe the Illiad references were on target.

" Pedro wins set 3, 4-3. Set point either way after Stubbs was down 3-0 "

& now ..

" Pedro wins set 4 4-0 to take a 3 set to 1 lead. Possible Match Set upcoming. "

'as usual'? Don't make me come over there!!

... I do wish I was just a little closer to the action, but unfortunately it is 740 miles northwest of me ... give or take a mile.

It would have been nice for someone there to be able to post a bit of a play-by-play/match breakdown, even if just between sets. Seems like Pedro really solved Billy in Set 4 (4-0), but how long can he maintain that edge? I have to imagine Billy will find an adjustment when the chips are down and try to outlast Pedro on stamina alone, if nothing else.

Couldn't tell they were yours (no name ..) -- but since no one else was posting any updates here, a simple copy/paste was in order.

So you posted an update which was not an update (or needed since the box scores are being posted up above)? Lol

You are funny Mitchell...

In-deeeeeeeeed. Well, obvious is as obvious does.

That's what I get for not paying attention to things ..... like the top of my browser window! Sigh.

At least I was able to provide some comedic relief..

Shocking for many of us who didn't get to witness Pedro in his prime. I've only heard stories!

I don't think I've ever seen the Air Hockey community so on the edge of their seats for a challenge match before... and this one wasn't even broadcast!

I'll be up all night waiting for those Vimeo clips.

Pedro... congratulations on an amazing victory. I can only hope you can come to the World Championships in Houston this July and defend your new ranking!

Billy, I already have a pretty good idea of what you'll be doing for the next few months. Watch out people.

Congrats Pedro! Amazing Pedro the new Achilles Otero! Billy definitely put up a great fight and I can't wait to see a rematch in person!

So Nizzi, how are them words tasting right now? You still willing to play Pedro for $1000 or whatever you said? -Chuck

Thanks to Pedro for travelling so far to play. IMO, Pedro's skill is the highest ever by a Venezuelan player. He'll do well at the next Nationals. Thanks to Dan, Q and Goran for reffing. Videos will be up soon.

Next on the docket for The Billy Stubbs Challenge:

Mark Nizzi, available March 22-31, if Nizzi wants to play
Syed Rahman, April 14

After these matches, I'm going to withdraw The Billy Stubbs Challenge to focus on the upcoming IL State and world-level events. Players can still challenge for ranking, but I will no longer be providing additional incentive. If I am still on top later this year, I will probably put the offer back on the table.

Looking forward to the CA State this weekend. I know that I'll have to play even better than I did today to fair well against Davis and company.

Chucky boy, I KNEW ALL ALONG ;) what Pedro was capable of. When i impersonate DJ on the forums, i gotta favor Billy. :)

I have alot of confidence i can defeat Pedro, but this is his time, so lets talk about that later.....in like 5 or 10 minutes! ;)

Congratulations again, Pedro! Celebrate your win.

Billy, youre still the champ. Good hard fight!

Wow, what a match... If these scores are right, then congratulations are in order... Congrats Pedro Otero on your victory over Billy Stubbs... Billy has been playing amazing airhockey for quite a while now. For you to beat him says a lot about you as a competitor and champion of our sport. Being no stranger to losing the #1 ranking in a match myself, I can imagine what Billy is feeling right now... Hang in there champ! Once again, congrats to Pedro on his win... We all look forward to painting that big target on your back now and coming after you. I'm sure given your latest conquest that you are still a very "easy" (old inside joke) player to defeat. I hope to see you at the nationals for once ...

Danny

This match creates a big change in air hockey history.

As Jesse Douty said about Tim Beating Jesse, that promoted interest in the sport, and so does this!

Hey, we need some post match analysis by Q, Dan, Goran, anybody!

What did Pedro do offensively that worked? How was he able to defend Billy? That is the big question!

What tactics? What strategies used by both?

What turned the match to Pedro and when did it become apparent?

Thanks,

Carolina Phil

Congrats to Pedro on a well played match taking the #1 ranking and moving up to #14 in the ratings. Would be interesting to see if Pedro could win a nationals. I know Billy was running a fever and he was playing far from his best. I've never seen Pedro play, and was impressed by his offence. Very poweful shots almost impossible to read.

First: thanks to billy for play me and gave me the chance to become the #1.
Second:i did not get tim's bet since i was unable to bring enogh money from venezuela due to new changes in our country.
Thanks to Dan Meyer and Q for their support.
To Tim, Andrew and the others whos were sure of my lost: thanks guys, you make this victory even better.
To my venezuela partners, thanks for help me on recovering my best shape in the table. You all are a big part of this victory.
About the match,i had the impression that we both do not have deffense, or that we had too good attack; some games i did not block a single shot, and same for billy. I felt like a dragon attacking and like a teletubbie defending.
And finally, only because my ego is now taller than the sears tower: Hector beated every human, but he cant do nothing against a god (omg, sounds nice imo)

What did Pedro shoot? What was his pattern of attack?

Thanks,

For the Chicago players, this is how it felt when the Houston champion Danny was upset by Nizzi. We were talking for weeks about, how could this have happened!

Pedro, congratulations. I only saw the brief video Donovan posted on facebook, but can tell you have a powerful and deceptive offense. Can't wait to see it in person, hopefully in July in Houston.

Billy, what you have done the past year and 1/2 has been great for everyone in this sport. We look forward to many more great days for you. You had one bad day and many great ones.

We all look forward to great battles later this year.
