Add Goran Mitic to the list of players the majority of whom would beat Pedro right now. I accidently left him off.

Just look how Goran and Billy and Dan crushed the Venezuelans this weekend, about 50 games to 10.

Pedro

Unfortunately the match between you and Billy might never happen since you live so far away. But if it does and yoo are still playing as well as you used to, it would be great to watch. I do not think you can say you are the only one who can beat Billy without even playing more than 1 or 2 top level players over a lengthy period of time.

I believe that Pedro is unique in having a great natural talent for AH. He came out of nowhere to get second place in nationals three years in a row, and I saw him defeat Jesse Douty and others. But the problem is that he has not been playing top ranked players for the past several years.

If Pedro stayed in Houston or Chicago for, say, three months and played regularly, then I believe that he could compete for the top 5 rankings in AH.

Pedro could return to 1 - 5 IF he worked his way up the rankings ladder, starting with, say, the top 16.

But, for now, I don't think Pedro would win matches against half of the following 20 AH listed in no special order. If he played all 20, a dozen of them (12) would defeat him now. All 20 are extremely good at this sport and know how to win.

Billy
Danny
Ehab
Tim W.
Brian Accrocco
Pete L.
Mark Nizzi
Keith Fletcher
Athony Marino
Davis
Mark Robbins
Dan Meyer
Albert Ortiz
August
Evan S.
Travis
Brian Quezada
Syed
Andy Y.
Carolina Phil

Pedro would 4-0 half that list. He would finish top 10 now easily, top 5 with practice.

Phil, i honestly believe you dont have a real perception of the airhockey level we actually have in venezuela, maybe Paulo and Dionisio updated Billy & Co. this weekend about it.

No, Paulo and Dionisio did not. The game count was near 50 to 10. The fact that you thought it could be otherwise shows us that you are underestimating the canyon that separates you from the top 20 players in the world.

Yes, you have the talent after many years of absence to return to the top of AH, but this will take a year or more of playing matches against those top 20 AH players. Only then, will you secure a solid place in the Top Five.

And yes, you are right that I was suprised that you and Jose defeated us, and did it, for three straight world class tournaments. My love of our sport of AH caused me to praise and continue to praise your accomplishment as one of the greatest in AH. It will always be remembered in AH history books!

But, years have gone by, and the top 20 players now are living gladiators that would battle you with great skill and talent and experience. Here are ways that things have changed:
1. Players are playing weekly for four years.
2. Players learn from many different players worldwide
3. Players use video of other players and themselves
4. Players have access to many tables, including ones in their homes.
5. Players are battle tested and experience in long matches.

My point is that there are many great players now. So the road to the Top Five has too many obstacles for you to do it until you live in the Gladiator Arena and pay your dues in busted dreams and broken hopes.

But, after losing matches and sets to the Top 20 for a year, I believe Eagle Pedro would again soar high where only two, three or four have ever been.

But a sad caustion: I have watched many try to come back from their days of past glory, and when they are burned by the flames of modern AH, they shed their tears and fade away never to return to the Table.

I must also alert you to this shocking fact: I think that you can become better than you ever were at your very best back in the day; but I don't think that you today are yet as good as you were at your best.

But, listen, Billy is better than he was years ago at his best; Keith Fletcher is better; Davis is better, Brian A is better; Pete L is better. Even,Mark Robbins and I are better than we were years ago! New talent Colin and Mike Cummings and Jacob W are incredibly hard to beat in matches. Air hockey is being played more like a sport than ever before. To compete at these elite levels will take time for you or anybody. You can do it because you are a special talent, but not till these top 20 put you through Hell.

When i said "maybe Paulo and Dionisio updated Billy & Co. this weekend about it" i were talking about that they maybe talked with billy, goran, Q, dan... about how we are playing right now. I did not expected a different results in the matches, i predicted a 16-2 victory of billy and did not make predictions of the other 2 challenges since i never saw goran or dan playing. Of course, congrats to the winners.

Pedro: Is there a chance we could see you play Billy in a challenge match? I'm sure everyone would enjoy seeing that match in Chicago.

I am willing to bet Pedro $1000 US that Billy beats him 4 sets to 0.

We have seen Pedro talk on the forums for quite a long time. How about let's see some Air Hockey action on the Table?

As we say in America, put your money where your mouth is.

Gambling does have a history with air hockey, if I'm not mistaken. Billy has offered up money - which isn't gambling at all, since he's not taking any money on a win of his own, just pure incentive.

I think we'd all like to see the great Pedro Otero back in the US. I myself will give you $200 cash on arrival to Chicago... all you have to do is play Billy. We'd like to make this match happen. It would be exiciting for the sport.

I don't believe Tim would post on here if he wasn't serious.

OK, work out the details with Billy.

I am going to need to see a verifiable copy of your ticket to Chicago. I plan to go watch the match, and I'm not making arrangements to attend if you no-show like other matches/tournaments.

Also, you and I will both give our $1000 USD wager to an independent party to hold (Phil Arnold?). This must be done before the match, at least 7 days, because, again, I'm not going to travel to Chicago for this based on your claim that you will show up.

If you don't want to provide travel verification, then I will only accept if the $1000 is given to an independent party at least 14 days in advance of the match and forfeited on a no-show.

Let's get this match scheduled...

Tim

I will take the bet, i cant reject it.

I just wrote a PM to Billy via facebook. Next week is carnival so im ready and able to play from monday 18th. I already have the ticket purchased, i just need re-schedule the dates, after carnivals should be easy to find available places.

Phil Arnold is ok for me to hold the 1K$. Due to the limitations we have here to find dollars i will try to find the best way to send to him my part as soon as I have my ticket ready, probably i will order an international transfer from spain to any phil´s bank account if it is ok with him (is paypal available in USA?)

Thanks to Q and Dan for their incentive, it will help with hotel accomodations.

EDIT Paulo told me via whatsapp that he will make the trip with me

I would rather see Pedro prepare for this great AH match by first coming to Houston to play matches in training. Once he worked out with Danny, Tim, Ehab and the other gladiators, then a match with Billy would be meaningful. Hey, I might even "back" him up for $500!

As it is, a long flight from the summer of Venuzuela to the frigid cold of Chicago to throw himself into a sudden match for money against Billy would lack the sporting quality that our great sport deserves.

Wise words Phil. Maybe Pedro should listen to you and not trash talk so much. Then folks wouldn't be apt to challenge him to put his money where his mouth is.

Nizzi is welcome to come play me any day before the 18th of February. However, as Nizzi stated earlier, our match might not happen. I am tentatively scheduled to play Pedro on the 20th of February. After that I am headed west to play in the CA State.

March 9, 10, 30, and 31 are also open dates. After these dates pass, The Billy Stubbs Challenge will be taken off the table in order to prepare for the World Championships in Las Vegas.

I am looking forward to playing against Nizzi and Pedro! They are two of the best challenge match players in the history of the sport.

Billy, I hope you know that comment was just a lighthearted jab in Nizzi's direction, not yours.

Seriously though, of all the active players, I think Nizzi is one of only 4 who could give Billy a good match right now if they were properly prepared and conditioned... Hynes, Weissman, Shoukry and Nizzi.

I'm really looking forward to Billy v Pedro, but I'm sure it's going to be another solid 4-0.

Great. After you post travel verification, get your money to Phil by next Wed, Feb 13th. I will do same. If you can't post the travel verification then, as long as you get money to Phil by tomorrow, Feb 6th, I'll still honor the wager.

I can't wait to see how the match turns out.

Pedro, I have edited your previous message with your flight specifics. I may be being overly cautious but it looks like I can cancel or change your flight itinerary with the information you provided and I didn't want that be out on the forums. You can private message or email the details to people who inquire.

Pedro said he would scan and upload his actual ticket. That didn't happen, and therefore, based on the offer I made (which is quoted above), and because it is now Feb 7, 2013, the wager is no longer offered.

If Pedro continues with his plan to play Billy, he will have to be playing for the Billy Stubbs Challenge only.

Take care...

Otero said he would scan and post his ticket. That didn't happen.

But I'll think about a way for the wager to still happen. I won't be making plans to attend at this point, but there might be another way.
