maybe what you were saying got lost in translation? it sounded like you were saying that you WOULD do that. if that is not what you meant, than i apologize for that. as for me, i was a new player in 2001 ... no reason that you would remember me.

i agree that we should have official refs that do not play.

those are the droids we're looking for.

@JSB: You are in the system. You just have an "inactive" status/rating currently according to the set of rules in place at this moment. This means you can play those 2 people, you can play new players, you can travel to play people. All of these would influence your rating, even at a inactive state. Read the "explanation" link on the rankings page for all the details. How would you plan to improve your seed if you didn't travel to someone with a ranking under that system? If you want to see where you fall currently in rating versus anyone who has ever had a reported set on AHW and see your current status, there's a link for htat as well on the rankings page of AHW. (2012 Status link)

thanks for that clarification ... i am about two years behind on forum messages. as for your age old question about how to improve my seed without traveling etc. lol ... i wish i knew. i am just glad to learn that i don't have to start from scratch with five. if it is only two ... then let the killings begin.

Its still 5 people (20 games total) or play in a state/nationals to go to "Active". I meant you can play those 2 in order to gain rating points if you win depending on the initial separation of points and what k-value is used. You would be considered "Inactive" until you played the 5th player (and had 20 games). You can use the ratings calculator to see what changes you'd expect.

well blah. back to square one for all isolated players. i know there is no good answer but to travel, and i used to ... a lot. not so much right now.

When you just lost the winner brackets finals, you really dont want be a ref, trust me. In a national tournament, there are a lot of people who could be a ref, without distracting someone who is still figthing for the title. It do not make sense for me. I respect the rule that the winner must be ref in the same table for the next match, but like everything in the world, there are exceptions.
(sorry, but i think that this should be discussed separately)

Hi Pedro,

I don't know about this incident JSB is referring to, but I do know you admitted in public, along with Jose, that you guys reported a match that did not take place between you two...so that you could get a better seed in the 1998 California tournament. You may recall that some people in the USAA board wanted to sanction you guys for it after that tournament when they found out. But since Jose was the new Champion, there were a lot of people who thought it was best to look the other way.

I think it is that sort of thing people worry about now.

They start to wonder about any other matches that you report in which there are no witnesses, especially when the system being used is so easy to manipulate.

Anyhow, I do hope to get a chance to play against you in Houston.

Take care...

Tim

I'd love to see Tim and Pedro play. I've only seen it happen once in 2000.

I entered USAA Airhockey in 1998, and there was so much talk about the Venezuelans. Every one of the great American masters except Tim it seemed, couldn't quite take the Venezuelans down. A couple of the greats could beat Pedro in the winners bracket of a WC's, but only Tim was beating Jose and Pedro challenge matches. It was really exciting to hear about. Again, I was fortunate enough to see Tim take on Pedro and also Jose, in the 2000 tournament.
Before his match with Jose, Tim commented to me that he'd hurt or tweaked his shoulder with his prior match win over Ehab (match point either way), and that he was lacking power on his right wall shots. Tim ended up losing 4-2 to Jose, after a 2-0 lead. Being a huge Weissman fan, that match loss hurt to see, especially after having that lead. He next lost to Pedro 4-2 as well. Tim made a last minute decision to attend this tournament, and prepared for the for it with only a week and a half prior to its beginning. Taking 3rd wasn't too bad considering that. As well, Don James was the only guy to defeat Pedro that weekend, besides Jose.

In 2001, Tim prepared hard for the Jillians tourney, and looked very sharp. His only loss in that tournament was to Danny Hynes in the finals. Tim took Danny out of the winners side, the day after Weissman went 7-0 in the swiss. Tim did not face Pedro, but i believe would have defeated Otero, had they played. Weissman faced then champion Jose Mora in the Swiss on that Saturday, in a best of 5. It was a great battle (I ref'd it). Tim from the beginning took it to Jose. However after a 2-0 lead i believe, Jose started to catch some momentum, and got a game. Game 4 was a tight battle, but Tim got it, either 7-4 or 7-5, winning 3-1. The whole room was solely focused on this match. I do not think there were any others being played. Both sides had their cheering sections. What an amazing battle it was. I really hope to see some more of these again when Jose and Pedro both attend the same WC's tournament in 11 years. However things have changed a bit since. We have some people who have risen up to the highest of ranks since (Davis H., Anthony M., etc.) Should be interesting to see how they and others like them fare should they meet up with Jose, Pedro, or Javier or any other Venezuelans!

I agree with Nizzi's comments here. It is going to be great to see how the Venezuelans play and I'm excited about them coming to Houston so a lot of us 'newbies' can witness the play and style of the Venezuelans. I love watching our greats play including Danny, Nizzi and Brian with their power, Billy, Tim, Davis and Ehab with their discipline and Anthony Marino with his incredible speed. I've only seen Jose play in practice a few times and there is a flare to his game that is different and exciting. I'm looking forward to playing any of the men that I can face that make this great trip from South America to here in Houston next month to participate in this event.

All these questions shed light on the new seeding system revealing pros and cons. Keep it up.

This is what it means to test a new system. We used it in Vegas. We are examining the way it worked there and now the aftermath. And, now we will use it in the July Houston Event the same as we did in Vegas. That is what we voted to do.

I agree with Andrew and others that we stick exactly to the Plan and continue to observe it in the "labortory" and then debate the results and process afterward.

We will learn from the process what works best.
