Regarding puck fly-offs: it happens much less in Colorado, I think due to the thin air. Instead of trying to change the table, can the air be changed? Why not play matches in the optimal environment?

Excellent idea, Mike.
When should I book my ticket to the Colorado Nationals?
(In all seriousness, I'd love for the tourney to be in CO for 2014)

If you mean the Air breathed on the surface of Table, I suggest Mark experiments with various under the Table gasses and combinations thereof.
Heliox for starters. Hydrogen. And methane, if available.

I move that all future USAA-sanctioned Nationals be played inside hypobaric chambers (unless in CO).

Mark Nizzi single-handedly tried converting Mike Thomas' trailer into a methane chamber. The results were not positive.

Whatever....and when would something like that ever turn out positive? Maybe perhaps if it was in YOUR TRAILER, where the methane smell could drive out all the mice and fleas living there with you.

I'm going to start looking into this after the first of the year Dan. If I can secure a location and tables i'll do my best to make it happen.

Unfortunately my tables that have been in the garage/barn for 28+ years (Brunswicks and a Dynamo) are leaving the state because the owner needs the garage back. The only sanctioned tables at public places in the Denver-Boulder area that I know of are either a. beat all to hell (Walrus, etc.) or b. in city rec centers that close at 9 pm (Broomfield, Longmont). That's why people play at Mike Thomas' mobile home.
I and others have tried to get some new sanctioned tables out there (Gold Standard preferred!) but so far no luck. I will continue to try but the best thing the CO players can do is to find a suitable location and convince them to either purchase tables or allow us to operate tables there. That means supporting such a place by playing there and helping to organize tournaments and build a player base.

Perhaps the rules of who gets possession of the puck after a fly-off should be changed. I feel that when a player has possession and doesn't commit a foul and the puck flies off he should keep the puck, especially when it keeps happening. If the ref. determines that the puck was struck blatantly hard and or 'poorly' for example it was already rising up off the table he could make a judgement call.

The puck flys out... for both players. There is no need to change the rule IMO.

You have to adjust your game to what the table gives you. Until a time when the perfect Puck and table are designed to hold any type of shot, the offensive player needs to adapt shot selection. IMO

The rules improved greatly (thanks to Phil Arnold, Jim Carter, Dave Walker) over the original Brunswick rules which gave a FREE SHOT penalty for knocking the puck off the table. And if the defender moved his mallet in any direction at all and the puck went off, it was considered his foul.
