There's not even a definition of what an ultra pro is written down anywhere. That term is not something the USAA recognizes.

Simply not true! 100% inaccurate. The USAA does recognize Ultra Pro and it should be written down. Before you lecture any of us I suggest you get your facts straight

I was luck to find important historical references. I have Don Metzler's Secretary's notebook of the minutes of the meetings of the HAP Chapter of the USAA, June 17, 1990. Held at Denny's at I-10 & Wirt Rd, Houston, Texas. Under Old Business: "Ultra-Pro voted in as term". Also, mentioned that Anton Mawhood took the minutes of the last meeting. So the actual written definition, perhaps Anton still has.

Andrew is going to be crushed to hear this.

Yeah he is, you can't argue with the facts. Its official, "ultra pro" is recognized by the usaa. Travis, can you update the constitution to reflect Vince's findings? Glad we got that taken care of.

This was from the minutes of the Houston group which official voted on the use of Ultra Pro back in May 1990. Contact Anton Mawhood to get those meeting minutes for exactly what was the wordage of Ultra Pro.

It could very well be that the USAA national board adopted the definition. I don't know personally. It's been so long ago.

You will be surprised what you find out by reading minutes. Like I found out why the 1991 Houston Classic Open was also used to determine Houston City ranking. At the January 1991 HAP Chapter meeting, Phil Arnold recommended to piggie back the results. During this era of Houston airhockey, Houston typically held three major tournaments a year: National level, State level and city level. The 1991 Houston Classic Open was a national level event during a city level time period. Not enough manpower to hold two separate tournaments during the summer in Houston so Phil's idea of piggie backing the results was a good idea.

Well, that's what the HAP chapter said... but I wanna know what the rival Houston Chapter had to say about it?

The plot thickens.

The Houston Chapter essentially was abandoned and their board members, Phil, Patrice, Robert, and Don M & Don B all served on the HAP Chapter board along with T.C., Anton, Tim and myself to throw out a few names.

You would think the USAA Historian would know that... oh wait... that's Chris Green. My bad!

I recall that meeting of HAP at Denny's. Don Metzler was there with his 20 year in advance diagrams on graph paper about how many inches to sit out or move forward to defend agains all possible shots--which he had carefully drawn in with a straight edge. He said if the defender stayed exactly on those lines, these shots could be blocked. His mathmatical and geometrical methods were used by him and with good results against sytem players like Jesse Douty with whom he always gave a good account of himself. Probably the last of the best volley players who used these short very precise charges on the trajectories to keep the puck banging back at you until he scored. Where is that guy? He would like to chill at SRO with a Heinekan inside and his Saub outside with a book on WWII military history. I think he would be pleased with the way the sport has developed since his early contributions.
