For those of you wondering why our participation in the state games is important, here is why. As a member of the National Congress of State Games, the Rocky Mountain State Games is an official qualifier for the State Games of America. The State Games of America is a biennial amateur multi-sport event for athletes of all ages. Medal winners from the 31 states conducting statewide sports festivals, known as State Games, are eligible for this event. If we have a great showing in Colorado, other states could add air hockey to their state games as well. From there, once the event is held across the US, it could be introduced as an event in the State Games of America as well. The growth opportunity that could stem from this event is monumental. This year the State Games of America are being held in Lincoln, Nebraska and they are scheduled to be held in Michigan in 2017.
It doesn't hurt that they have Olympic ties as well.....
"Olympic hurdler and bobsledder Lolo Jones and Olympic wrestler Jordan Burroughs are encouraging eligible athletes from across the country to join them at the 2015 State Games of America in Lincoln/Omaha, Nebraska, July 28-August 2.
The State Games of America is the largest Olympic-style sports festival in the nation. SGA 2015 is expected to draw 20,000 athletes to compete in more than 60 sports."

***Just to Clarify, the 2015 AHPA World Championships will be held at the Rocky Mountain State Games in Colorado Springs, CO.

I checked out the State Games of America site a while back, and I'm curious how it would work with respect to AH. To play in the national events, you have to either live in Nebraska or have qualified by winning/placing in one of the other State events. So how would an AH Worlds fit into their structure? Would the winners of your event be considered CO players even if from another state?
Chris, maybe you should just make your AHPA tournament a CO State. That way it would fit into the State Games structure and might even qualify for de facto USAA sanctioning. :)

I applaud the efforts by Chris and Brian here! This sounds like an absolutely outstanding opportunity for our sport to grow to a level I have only dreamed of. This event by far has the most upside of any event in the modern era of our sport. I really hope that every player who has ever picked up a mallet will seriously consider travelling to this event so that we can put our best foot forward. Our sport deserves this opportunity and we can not pass this up! I look forward to an explosion of our sport to the masses that could potentially double or triple our player base with the potential exposure this tournament has.

Goran,
The organization, AHPA, sponsoring the Denver tournament has not requested our United States Air Hockey Association sanctioning.
The USAA will hold a sanctioned World AH Tournament this year.

Overhead view of the main tournament area for the 2015 AHPA Air Hockey World Championship in Colorado Springs July 24-26. The shadows are a little exaggerated in this picture and with extra lighting they won't be an issue. The fountain will be covered by a stage and will be the likely home of the command center. Exciting day! Don't miss out, register now at http://ow.ly/M7kFd

Take care of your sore muscles this year at the 2015 AHPA Air Hockey World Championship. Chair massages will be available on site. We are currently working on special rates for players! Also, the Chapel Hills Mall has a movie theater, mini golf, kids train rides around the mall, a kids play area with small rides, Color Me Mine Pottery Painting, Build a Bear, an arcade, and of course, tons of shopping!

A couple of tournament updates:
I reached out to ESPN to see if they would be willing to help us get some air time again this year at our event. I heard back today and they said that while they will not be doing the same "Summer of Champions" segment this year, they are always interested in great plays and cool video, especially of sports that they don't get to see that often. He said that its "definitely possible" that Sportscenter would be interested again in airing some footage from our event. He also told me that as the tournament gets closer, to contact him so that he can make sure that the video we shoot gets in the hands of the right people. It's not a guaranteed spot like last year but we will definitely be going out of our way to capture some great moments at this year's event to send to the folks at ESPN. No promises, but its always nice to at least have the opportunity to be seen by the right people. I will remain in contact with them in case things change and an opportunity comes up for us to get a more definite spot.
The other update is in regards to our venue at the Chapel Hills Mall. One thing we were a little concerned about when deciding to leave the Denver County Fair was possibly losing out on all the foot traffic that we had there. After getting some numbers from the Marketing Director at the mall, it is highly likely that our foot traffic will be significantly higher then it was at the fair! The mall averages about 142,000 visitors a week with a majority of those being on the weekend. She said it is highly likely that our foot traffic for the whole weekend will be in the 40-50 thousand range. The fair brought in about 12,000 visitors so this venue will likely give us an increase in foot traffic of tens of thousands! Help us put on a show for all the passersby and register for what is going to be an unforgettable event! www.theahpa.com/registration.html

This looks like a great venue, and the ESPN opportunity sounds really exciting! Timing won't allow me to go to this, but I wish I could. Great work by Brian and Chris and their team on this!

What rules will this tournament follow? If there are any deviations from the USAA rules, what will those be?
Thanks.

It's the morning of the Singles Event and just getting ready to play. I'm very thankful for the effort Chris and Brian have put into this event. I pray it is one of many with the State Games organization. It is a great way to promote the game we love so much. Considering my family and I are consumers of air hockey, I would love to see a lot of new faces and players. We are going to start an Air Hockey program in Beaumont upon our return. Of course we will tie it in closely to the Houston Scene only 90 miles away. We need new blood as the old guard generation is definitely approaching sunset fast. I hope for all of the Political Powers involved can really see that this is an exciting time for this sport and put their differences behind. There are more and more opportunities to play that I can recall in the past 5 years and the burden is being shared by many and not the few. Keep growing and keep playing.
