The Texas State Open is officially announced for Friday, March 13 - Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Skybox in Houston, TX. Xtreme Airhockey has secured the location, tables and human resources, so we are official.

Details for the events, schedule, registration fees, and other details will be provided in the coming weeks.

We know there will be an open doubles even on Friday and Open Singles Saturday and Sunday. Likely those will be the only event. We will shift the regular weekly tournament to Thursday, March 12, so travelling players who wish to get in on an extra event, please come down on Thursday. If we have enough interest for Friday early afternoon, we will hold a Press Your luck competition.

More details to come...

Leveled Tournament: Thursday, March 12 @ 8 PM

In Houston, we hold a regular weekly "Leveled" tournament. This is where the Xtreme level system (described in the open singles) comes into play. The goal of this event is to create as close to an even opportunity for all players by having higher skilled players awarding points to lower skilled players. In short, a player of a lower skill level will receive points at the start of each game equal to the difference in the skill levels (with one exception). For instance, if a level 7 plays a level 3, the level 3 will start each game leading 4-0. All games are played to 7 points, so the level 3 player only has to score 3 points to win the game. But the level 7 player is very skilled and capable of overcoming that deficit. So the system provides a fair opportunity to both players.

All players are ranking from level 1 (novice) to level 7 (grand master). New players typically start at level 1 unless Xtreme management evaluated the player as good enough to start as a level 2. For this tournament, matches will either be the best 2 games of 3, or best 3 games of 5 depending on the number of participants. Like Open Singles and Doubles, this event is a double elimination tournament, meaning that a player must lose two matches to be eliminated. Cash prizes and award will be given to the top finishers.

This event has the same price for all competitors.

Press Your Luck - Fri, March 13 @ 2 PM

Press Your Luck is a risk/reward challenge game. Depending on the number of players, a grouping of 6-8 players will be created. The players are ordered initially by their classification levels (See Mitic rating explanation in the Open Singles Product). The game lasts for 7 rounds. Each round begins with the person at the bottom of the ordered ladder having a turn on offense. This player will face opponents in order of the ladder. When it is your turn on offense, you always start with the puck. You goal is to score on your opponent and not get scored on. If you successfully score, you have the option to take your points and stop or "press Your Luck" with the next opponent. After each competitor completes his/her turn, the next person in the ladder is up on offense and the defenders again line up in order of the ladder except for the player who is on offense.

The game is interesting however because the next opponent in the ladder is of higher skill level (at least initially). And to compensate for this, points are not evenly allocated. Instead the nth term series formula is used. This means that the first player is worth 1 point. The second player is worth 1+2 or 3 points. The third player is worth 1+2+3 or 6 points and so fourth. So scoring on each successive player gets you more points. But there is a catch. If you get scored on at any point, you lose everything you gained plus 1 from your total entering the round. This is why the game is called "Pressing your luck". If you have earned 6 points, do you stop and keep your points, or do you go against that next player and try to go for 10? It's risk/reward.

After each round completes, players are reordered based on total. If 2 players have the same total number of points, their order does not change. But players lower in the ladder will shift up above those with fewer points. Then the next round begins. So there are many strategy variations, but typically it's better to be higher in the ladder, as you know how much you need to maintain a lead.

The game ends after the 7th round or when a person has mathematically locked up the most points which can occur in earlier round if his/her number of points exceeds the total of the next player in the ladder plus the maximum that can be gained in the subsequent rounds. If the game is being player to seed a final event with more than 1 player advancing, then the game will complete when all 7 rounds have completed.

This event has the same price for all competitors.

Open Doubles - Friday, March 13 @ 7 pm

Airhockey is a single player game and yet we have a doubles event! In the airhockey format, doubles is more of a "tag team" approach. A player remains active on the table until scored on by his opposition. Then his/her partner takes over and remains until scored on, and the cycle repeats.

All matches are the best 3 games of 5 or 4 games of 7 depending on number of teams, and all games are player to 7 points. The tournament is, like singles and the Leveled event, double elimination. Spinoff tournaments are typically not done for doubles, but, if players express an interest before the event begins, spinoffs can be included.

Cash prizes and trophies are awarded to top finishing teams. Player select their own partners. However, if a player registers but does not have a partner, Xtreme Airhockey will pair unmatched players.

The event has 2 pricing points. It utilizes the same Mitic rating model as singles, but their are only 2 levels - Master and not masters. Since pairs of master almost always win the top prizes, they pay more to enter. All other players may play for a lower rate.

Open Singles - Sat, March 14 from 11 am to 10 pm and Sun, March 15 from noon to 8 pm

The Open Singles is our main feature event. It is a double elimination tournament that requires all day Saturday and Sunday to complete. The start and end times are listed but could change, so check back in with our main even pages in the final week before the tournament for any updates. All matches in the main tournament are the best 4 games of 7, and their is no leveling. All matches are played straight up. When players are eliminated form the main draw, they qualify for a spin-off tournament with all other players eliminated in the same bracket. Cash and trophies prizes are paid to the top finishers. The exact number of prize winners and amounts of payouts is determined and posted once registration has closed on Saturday morning.

There are 3 different price categories for this event. Xtreme Airockey uses a 1-7 rating system. The USAA officially recognizes the Mitic ratings for most of its events. The player base also has general terminologies associated with the various levels. To register for Open Singles, select your Mitic rating level from the drop-down below under "Product Options", and then click the "Add to Cart" button. If you are a new player (never played before, choose the 1-3 range). If you are an experienced amateur or professional player, locate your rating by going to http://www.airhockeyworld.com/rankings.asp and look for your name in the list on the right (AirhockeyWorld Ratings). If you do not see your name in the list contact Xtreme Airhockey for assistance at 281-795.6376, and ask for Brian Accrocco.

Registration for the TSO is officially Open.

The pricing model is posted after this post. Early registration rates apply through Saturday, March 7 at 10 pm. After that the regular registration rates kick in. There are no quarters needed for any of the events. It is all inclusive.

To register, go to http://www.unapllc.com/products-page

To use the registration page, first register for singles and click "Add to cart". It will then ask you if you want to continue shopping or go to checkout. If you want to register for other events, click continue. Then register for additional events one at a time and click add to cart for each one. For Extra T-shirts, you can buy one or more at one size, add to cart, and then buy more at a different size. When you have made your last "Add to Cart", choose "Checkout" and then go and enter your information in the required fields. Note that for the country, choose "USA" if you are from the US. After that, log into your PayPal account and submit payment. Then you're done. Easy!

You may register for all of the events you want at once, but if you are paying for yourself and others, please do a single person's registration for events. By that I mean go to the registration page and choose the events and appropriate Mitic level for yourself (singles and doubles) with 1 quantity for each and then pay and then do the same for each other person for whom you are paying. This will create a single record in our registration database for each player. If you do end up accidentally submitting multiple registrations for the same event (you add 2 Open singles to your cart and pay for them in one transaction), please email me and we'll fix it. airhockeygod@att.net

All players registering in Open Singles receive a free tournament shirt. If you wish to buy extras, the registration page has a product offering for that. For that one, you may buy as many as you'd like all at once, and you can buy a different size.

If you register for singles or doubles at the wrong rate, we will contact you and ask you to reregister. Both are based on current Mitic rating. Please go check the ratings page to see your current rating. http://www.airhockeyworld.com/rankings.asp

All online payments must be done via PayPal. If you are local and want to pay by cash or check or if you live outside of Houston and prefer to mail a check or money order, that is fine too. Call or text me and I will send you my physical address. Please indicate with your payment which events for which you are registering and if you are paying for others and their events. My mobile number is 281-795-6376.

If you run into any technical snags, text me at 281-795-6376.
