Hi all! I understand this is a very last-minute post, but for anyone in the Southern New England area who might see this and be able to make it, I invite you to come to an air hockey tournament I'll be running today, Saturday, 12/13.
The tournament is taking place alongside a DDR tournament and Beatmania III tournament. (My main goal with this tournament is to generate interest for the game from those communities, it's been a last-minute add-on to the tournie lineup hence the last-minute post)
EVENT DETAILS: FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/961341240561525/ I made a post in there about it, look for "Nate Lemoi". It also contains the venue info:
Game Underground 1251 Worcester Road Framingham, MA 508-283-1503
-Tournament starts at 2PM -$2 entry, winner takes all -Format: double-elim or round robin depending on headcount. -Table: Dynamo 7' Blue Streak w/ short overhead light
If you see this and can make it, come on down! It's gonna be one hell of a day.

Thanks for the support Phil!
For some reason the edit button isn't showing up, I wanted to add this intro I just wrote: http://bit.ly/1slLkgg
I just wanted this topic to serve as a tournie announcement, but that post really gives the fuller picture of my background as both a tournament director and air hockey player. Hopefully it'll give people a little headstart in getting to know who I am.

I urge all AH players to read your intro info at the link you provide. Your experience running other types of tournaments/events will do a world of good for AH in your area. We also can provide suggestions developed over the years from our experiences doing AH events.
For example, we find that handicap tournaments work well because those in practice, like you, spot beginners points each game. They sometimes win, and this keeps their interest in showing up and improving. It helps the better player by pushing him/her to excel the point spot. For example, our top players (say, the top 20 for example) would spot a true beginner 5 points in a seven point game. As they gradually get better they advance to the next level where they get spotted 4 points; then 3, then 2, and so on.
Without seeing you play in person or on video, nor having you take our Evaluation Test (posted somewhere on this site), it is hard to rate your level of competence. But, with all due respect, my experience would predict that you would be around a high Level 2. This would mean in a 6 Level System used in Houston, you would be spotted 3 to 4 points per game versus players in Level 5 and 6 who are generally in the top 30 World Rankings.
There are players near New York and Philadelphia, and at one time north of you in Canada.
Let us know of your activities and how they progress.
You are of course invited to visit and test your skills in any of our major AH centers of activity, such as Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Denver, San Fran, and San Diego.
Best,
Phil Arnold

Phil is right... handicap tournaments definitely help to build a player base. We have found over the years that weekly tournaments just aren't fun at all for newbies when they get pounded into oblivion week after week. Eventually they stop showing up.
We use a 6 skill level system in Texas where the maximum point spot to any player is 5 points per game.
So a master level 6 player faces off against an up-and-coming level 3 player, and he would start each game with 3 points.
If that same level 6 player faced off against a level 0 beginner, he would only spot 5 points because 5 is the max.
Level 4 faces a level 3, he would give 1 point spot... etc.
Skill level assessment is a whole different ball of wax. I'd guess your players are all going to start out as level 0's. If you find yourself dominating every game, you should do the right thing and bump yourself up until the matches are challenging and/or you are actually losing some.
Of course, each game is a race to 7. Matches are up to you for a weekly event. It depends on how many tables you have, how many players and how much time. To keep things moving along quickly in a weekly tournament, we do best 2 out of 3 games. An official "match" in any other competition is actually best 4 out of 7 games.
Play puck!

Except in California, that is! (Once upon a time, anyway.) Somehow, us "wussy" Californians got by pretty well getting our teeth kicked in and eventually adapting to stem the abuse, although it certainly took us more time to round into form without the extra table time that handicapped matches tend to provide for less-experienced players.
That said, we did eventually move to handicapped tournaments and it's definitely the best way to go, but starting out with a new group, it might not even make sense to worry about that right away as I wouldn't expect more than maybe one or two players to really be head-and-shoulders above everyone else within a small-ish group comprised of new and/or relatively-inexperienced players.

Email me in advance for any tournaments on the East Coast, and I'll see if I can make it out. Always happy to provide tips and help get something started. Currently located in Brooklyn, but I'm from Houston where I learned from several master players. Keep me posted!
