It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we formally announce the 2014 Air Hockey World Championship! This event will be held in Denver, Colorado in partnership with the Denver County Fair (DCF) on the weekend of August 1st - 3rd. This year we have the very exciting opportunity to be front and center at an event that already draws more than 15,000 people. This indoor fair also covers over 300,000 air conditioned square feet. DCF organizers have expressed their desire to make us as visible as possible and their plan is to put us right at the entry so all of their attendees will see us as soon as they walk in the door. The DCF team is VERY excited to be featuring us and they are doing everything in their power to make this one of the best air hockey tournaments ever. We are also very thankful that Valley-Dynamo has agreed to sponsor us and ship our tournament tables to the event.

This event will without a doubt feature something for everyone. While you are off the table, the DCF features multiple pavilions with different types of exhibits including a kids pavilion for those of you with families, an Animal pavilion, a beer pavilion, and much more. Even better is that the fair is free to all tournament entrants! More information regarding the DCF can be found at www.denvercountyfair.org.

More details will be released as they become available but book your tickets now and don't miss out on what promises to be a fun event for everyone!

Location:

National Western Complex

Are the tables being shipped the usual ones we've been using over the years? Two of those play poorly. I'm hoping we can get some newer ones or others possibly added perhaps?

We will be receiving the same 10 tables we always get. These tables are put back onto the production line and tested every time Dynamo ships them to us to ensure they are functioning properly.

Very well done Chris! Seems like you took the venue to a much higher level at least in Colorado. I expect to make it there.

Are you going to post event shedule/details soon?

I look forward to this event. Since it is in the summer, I should be able to attend. There is one important issue though: the match-ups. The 2013 worlds were boring because the match-ups wern't great. What I mean by this is that match-ups interms of boring vs. awesome are whether there is some real competion going on on a match-by-match basis. For example: Danny vs. Billy, Wil vs. Marino, Tim vs. Keith Fletcher, etc., etc. The point is: players should be matched in ways that create epic moments in AH history. -Ben

I cant agree with that, the 2013 nationals was not boring. Maybe it was a small one, played in not the best tables, but there were a lot great matches.

For this year nationals: well, situation here in venezuela is "difficult" right now: it is imposible to find plane tickets to USA for the entire year. We will be very lucky if we can make it.

Credit goes to WCAH as well for helping make sure that I asked all the right questions to make sure that the venue was logistically sound to hold an air hockey tournament. Also for helping with negotiations with Valley-Dynamo and to Andrew for designing an awesome logo .

Is there any flexibility with this date?

I would like to be able to attend so we can hold a USAA Board meeting.

I would also ask that any promoters interested in holding a large event at least consult with the USAA Board to see if dates work well for purposes of having our annual meeting.

Thanks...

Tim

Unfortunately no, there is no flexibility in the dates. Those are the only dates the fair is going on.

Ben,

Worlds/Nationals are seeded mathematically and objectively based on whatever format we are using. Lately we have used USAA Ratings; before that, USAA Rankings. Randomization within groups has also been used in the past. The tournament organizer has no power to pick and choose whatever matchups he thinks will be exciting. The same goes for playoffs in any major sport I can think of.

Having said that, there were LOTS of exciting matches at the last Worlds - I was even in some of them! I have been to all 53 USAA Nationals and every one of them had thrilling matchups. Come to the Worlds and I guarantee you won't be bored - if you like great AH that is.

I just wanted to give a general statement about scheduling for this event. In the past, we have had the luxury to run on what many like to refer to as "air hockey time". Most of our events have been held at bars, bowling alleys, casinos, etc., which allow us to run pretty late into the evening. This message is the first of many from me that will reiterate that this venue is very different than what we have dealt with in the past. Partnering with an established event has numerous advantages but also presents us with some constraints. One of those constraints being that we have to follow the hours the fair is open. In order to fit our schedule of events within the timeline necessary, all events will start possibly as early as 10 AM sharp (Sunday can probably be pushed to 11 but that decision will be made Saturday night). Penalties for not reporting to your match within the established guidelines will be strictly enforced and players will be forfeited if necessary. Charts and match cards will be prepared the prior evening when possible and we will start calling matches immediately at the posted time. The early start times are not being done by choice, but out of necessity. As the organizers of this tournament, we need to do whatever is necessary to ensure that we finish the event withing the given time constraints. So, if you're someone used to waking up later (Mark Robbins), I'm giving you 4 months to practice waking up earlier!

How far in hours is Denver from Houston drinving non-stop?

It's a good distance... but a fun drive! Niki and I did it once for a tournament. I think it was about 14 or 15 hours maybe. We stopped for the night halfway on the way there and back, but we were exploring. There's a lot of cool stuff to do.

One of my favorite memories of that trip was when we had just crossed the New Mexico - Colorado border. We saw a brown bear on the side of the highway. So, we pulled over, grabbed the camera and jumped out of the car to go take some pictures of the bear. Wait... what?!? It's a BEAR! How stupid was that!! Luckily the bear was more scared of us than we were stupid. It ran off into the woods.

If you make the trip, you should definitely consider staying at Nizzi's place for a night or two ;)

Pedro, Houston to Denver and back is a long trip to drive. Gas isn't cheap either. I'd recommend just getting a flight, unless you are grouping up with others in a road trip.

That definitely true. Gas prices in Venezuela and the US are VERY different. We're at about $3/gallon here in Houston right now. It's likely cheaper to fly unless you're splitting costs with a group.

Greyhound Bus is about 23 hour trip one way at a cost of between $89 and $195 one way, depending whether you buy it in advance.

Too long of a trip for the money.

Better to shop around for a cheap flight or car pool.

I have officially activated registration for the 2014 Air Hockey World Championship in Denver, CO. Registration can be done at http://coairhockey.com/ahwc14.html . The fee structure has been designed with early, regular, and late registration pricing. The dates for each of these periods are listed on the registration page. Prices will increase as each registration period passes so don't delay! In addition, due to time constraints, we have had to set registration caps for all the events. From now until the 26th of April, I will only be advertising registration to individuals that are already part of the air hockey community. This includes individuals connected through social media, airhockeyworld.com, past tournaments, etc. Soon after the 26th an official press release will be made and will go out to multiple media outlets. In addition, the Denver County Fair will begin sending out mass emails to the tens of thousands of people it has access to through its email lists as well as advertising our events on its social media pages. I'm not trying to scare anyone (OK maybe I am just a little), but I truly don't know what the response will be to all the extra marketing help we have at our disposal for this event. To ensure your spot, please register as soon as you decide you want to be part of what we expect to be an unforgettable event!

Play Puck!

Chris Lee

In an effort to give back to the community, Colorado Air Hockey and the 2014 Air Hockey World Championship is donating a minimum of 10% of all sponsorship money we receive to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver. This is a great organization that provides comfortable, low-cost housing to out-of-town mothers and fathers needing to be near their hospitalized children as well as awards scholarships to high school seniors and grants to community groups.
We will also be collecting items from players to help with the supplies they need to maintain their houses. Their wish list can be found at
http://www.ronaldhouse.org/wish.html
