And I'd like to get a challenge in too. Hopefully I can schedule it during a time when no tournament is suddenly being hosted. ;)

Billy is from the South, from Georgia.

Hopefully this match will be put around on Vimeo.

You guys should get the word around to Danny, He doesn't come to the site that often.

Ok, so far I have the following players that I have a future challenge match with:

Pete Lippincott (challenged me previous to Chicago)
Billy Stubbs
Paulo Correia

I will do my best to play these matches ASAP, but can not commit to any dates right now. On November 4, my daughter will be having some tests done and pending the results is what I will be basing any of this on. I appreciate everyone's understanding in this matter.

Danny and I are playing a challenge match next Sunday, December 1, 1:00pm at Donovan's. The winner of the match will be ranked and rated #1.

Danny and I have a lot of history:

1999 Carter Cup: Me over Danny 3-1 (our first match)
2000-2009: Danny defeated me every match. I think he was 6-0. Danny also beat me in a challenge match 4-0, 16-9 in 2005
2010 Worlds: Me over Danny 4-3
2011 Worlds: Danny over me 4-1
2012 Challenge Match: Me over Danny 4-2, 20-14
2012 Vegas Worlds: Me over Danny 4-1 and 4-1
2012 Houston Worlds: Me over Danny 4-2
2013 HCO: Me over Danny 4-1, Danny over me 4-3, me over Danny 4-2

It's so on.

Great to know there is a challenge match for Number One in the World, and one that will UNIFY both rankings and ratings. Shall we call this a Unification Challenge Match?

Will anyone wager $500 on this match with half of the purse going to Grayson's Army? If I win, I'd pocket $250 and give $250 to Grayson's Army. If the other party wins, they'd do the same.

Any takers?

I was there for most of the match. Both players, as all can imagine, were playing at a level that noone else can play. Physically, on the outside, Danny was Danny and sweat was pouring out everywhere. What I read on his face though was a different story as he seemed determined, focused and connected with every shot that Billy shot.

Billy was also very sharp, but it wasn't quite the same dominating performance from Billy as we've seen in the past. Part of that I believe is that he had to go deep into his arsenal of shots to try and break through Danny's defense and Danny's defense was nearly impenetrable. I also felt like Billy was pacing himself waiting for Danny to run out of gas, but Danny was definitely steady. (sweaty, but steady)

Overall the match validates Danny's performance in Chicago as the World's Number One player for the 11th time. There were roughly 18 to 20 people in attendance at Protable Sports Arena. It was a well played match and fun to watch.

First off, congrats to Danny on a well played match! His defense was disciplined, quick to the spot, mechanically sound and his defensive strategy was spot on. His RWO was also sick. He earned and deserved the win.

In recapping this match, the table conditions have to be part of the story. The puck literally left the table 1000 times, which meant that whoever could minimize the puck leaving the table by just 10% more than the other player would win the match. That 10% difference would mean 50 extra possessions which would result in about 25 extra points. Neither Danny or I can spot the other player 25 points and win.

Danny was able to better deal with the conditions. His overs were a level up from mine - overs were very important given that under-banks were flying. Speaking of unders, Danny was able to score with a simplified LWU that was obtuse and struck from close-to-the-bank, which means that the puck is less likely to fly. Danny's defense would not allow that same shot from me to score. Danny's RWU was also more deceptive than mine. Whereas my RWU was more power-based, which was not the correct style for the conditions.

It was a messy defensive grind. Kinda reminded me of two high-powered football offenses, playing in the wind, rain and mud :)

I look forward to a rematch sometime in the spring. Thanks to Donovan for hosting and the Houston crowd for coming out.

Billy Stubbs

I'm wondering why the puck flew off so much. I played Syed on Donovan's table in April and the puck held the table pretty well (I think we used a red Lexan). Granted Billy and Danny put more power on their unders than me and Syed, but still, 1,000 fly-offs is a lot. Was it a puck issue?

1, 000 is a big number. That table holds as good as any around. Two very powerful players pounding shots that would never hold on any table. Could have been the Puck (yellow) which the players could have changed.

First, I would like to thank Donovan for his hospitality as always. We would not have an amazing venue to compete in if it weren't for him right now. Second, I would like to thank Lazaro for being the ref the entire time and pulling double duty by chasing down the numerous pucks that did fly off the table. As for the conditions... they are what they are. I have run into the flying puck problem ever since I have changed mallets because of my injury to my fingers. My grip is completely different and I have had a painful adjustment period. Although most of the pain has probably been felt by my numerous opponents that I literally hit with the puck... I don't necessarily know if it is the table or if it is the amount of power that we are now hitting the puck. I do know that this is the same table that I lost to Billy at the beginning of 2012. That is a big reason that I wanted to play on the same table. I wish that we never had a puck fly off the table ever in our sport... God knows my pinky wishes that as well after it took the full force of Billy's left wall under on more than one occasion this past Sunday.
As for the match, this was definitely a big win for me. I agree with Billy that it was a defensive grind. It was also similar to the previous match that I had with him where he beat me. In that match, I won the 1st set, then Billy won 2 out of the next 3 sets. Each of the sets went 7 games where I was demolished in 2 of those 7 games losing 7-3 and 7-2... Those 2 games made the difference in that match; cause not only were they heartbreakers for me, but Billy went on an 8-0 run after that to tap me out for the match. If I had won those 2 games, the result would have obviously been different. This time after Billy won the first set, we had two 6 game sets and two 7 game sets where I was able to pull them out this time. Had I lost those two games, we may have a result similar to the last match... It just goes to show how close these two matches were.
All in all, it was some great airhockey. I felt that we both played really well. I am grateful for everyone's support for both of us players and hope that we made it worth everyone's time. I hope this inspires everyone to play hard and keep fighting. I said before the match that I was going to dedicate my performance to Grayson and I meant every word of it. That little boy inspired my fat ass to not allow my lack of endurance and stamina to affect my focus and determination. I am proud to be a member of Grayson's Army!!!

You can tell it was a very hard fought match. Billy has dominated Danny in sets since 2012, and now Danny has turned the tide for the time being with this win. I definitely will look forward to another match with these two. Maybe Pedro Otero would like to set up a match with Danny or Billy. That'd be great to see.

As for me, I haven't played a challenge match in a year in a half now, my last being against Chris Lee, i think. I'd like to play again. Danny and I are working to schedule it, likely after the new year.

Congrats on a great win! I don't know of a whole lot of guys who have won a world championship and then defended #1 so quickly. I admire your willingness to take on any challenge.

As for the table, unfortunately flying pucks are a necessary evil in our sport. Even Mark Robbins hasn't been able to solve this problem with his new table. I guess the only saving grace is that the puck does not know who its attacker is and will fly off in fear irrespective of which player is striking it. The air that keeps the puck afloat is the element of nature that we have to deal with just like quarterbacks have to deal with rain and snow.

In any event, it looks like Billy put on an amazing fight against a guy who has proven to be the greatest player of all time.

Congrats to both players.

Ehab
