Fantastic!
And more good news: it's very likely that i'll come in good company, with Ruben Martin and our current top player, Venezuelan-born Jorge Tomas :)

This event is a great opportunity to promote the sport of air hockey. This event should be all over the internet and people will tell their friends and they will tell their friends and then there may be the bigger turn-out in terms of attendance in the history of the sport since Jillian's 2001 IF the info about the Championship will leak out to the whole of America and the majority of the people may come because they are interested in what this is all about, to show off their skills, something to do, whatever the reason may be, but if this event is promoted properly, and if the majority of America hears about this event, we may have a lot more players then there are today, and air hockey will grow and become bigger.

I am saying this because air hockey should survive.

Why should air hockey perish and football continue?

No reason.

Air hockey will survive and become one of the major sports known today.

I agree. And consider this: in a given year, many more adults will play a game of air hockey than play a game of football. Even touch football, much less tackle.

Football seems to have us beat in the live and TV spectator department though.

We might gain some extra media attention if we all dress up like sumo wrestlers.

I remember Mark saying that in order to have something televised, you buy the air time. CNN will televise twinkies if the company that produces it will buy the air Time. This can be done with air hockey on ESPEN let's say a minimum of a 30 minute program a week in the evening when everyone is in front of the telly.
There could be information about upcoming events in air hockey world, challenge match results, interviews with world champions, and more.

By the way Mark, I was wondering what you do to prepare for a tournament and how you will overcome old age and fatigue to become the player you were when you won those two championships so long ago. -Ben

I don't know about CNN, they try to retain some objectivity. But ESPN will run a sports (or pseudo-sports) event if you buy the air time. The last time I checked was before you were born, and the price was about $27,000 plus the cost to produce the 30-minute show. For which you got several showings, one at a good time, the others late-night.

Even back then it didn't make economic sense for a table manufacturer to buy the air time for the number of viewers you would get. Today, with internet video streaming, we have alternatives that are much cheaper or free. So I think that's the direction AH will go. Unless at some point a really wealthy AH player with lots of money to spare just buys the time on ESPN for the hell of it.

Ahem - old age? I'm much younger than a few other players whose names I won't mention.

Until my arm got sore a few weeks ago I was playing pretty damn good I thought. Beat Syed to move up in the Rankings, and took 2 games off Billy in our IL State match, which is tough to do. In some ways I'm playing better than I did in the 80's (shot variety) but my intensity and endurance is less. Even if I was playing at my '86 peak level, AH has advanced so much, especially defense, that it would be tough to win with an 80's-style game.

Before a tournament I try to get into practice, stay in aerobic shape, and not do anything stupid with my arm so as not to injure it.

Mark

If I experience soreness and/or fatigue in air hockey, it is because I start to lose sense of purpose, since now I am not used to playing for very long at any one time.

The Houston Worlds took it all out from my right arm.
It was extremely sore and so were the fingers so it was a challenge just to
normally move it.

I think it would be better to aside from practicing air hockey is to undergo endurance training.

Doubles Friday for sure. We might do a 4 person team event Thursday if the space is available to us.

Cross training for air hockey excellence is a must. In the great Northwest where you live, running is like a religion, so build up your wind and endurance. Good luck.

4 person team event? Sounds interesting! Aside from the number of players per team, I assume that's the same as doubles? Or is that an event of a completely different nature?

Singles and doubles with 4 player teams simular to carter cup, but shortened to allow for more teams to compete. Hopefully we get a team from Houston, California, Colorado, Chicago, Venezuela, Europe, and 2 others?

Dave Candanoza from Dallas called me and asked if there would be a Youth tournament. He said he and his daughter would come if there was a youth event. Any idea?

I'm all for a youth event. How do we attract kids during the school year? Can we start at 4 on Thurs., or is it better to have a shorter event starting at 7?

Depending on number of tables available, you can do on Sunday too. That's what we started doing because typically only 4-6 tables are needed for the main draw on Sunday for top 16 and 9-12 and maybe 13-16 spinoff. Plus you get more people back on Sunday and kids and parents get exposed to masters at their best. Hard part is that you have to have a dedicated TD and maybe 2 for the kids stuff, so it has to be people who are not actively playing on Sunday. We did 3 divisions based on age. you could conceivably do 2 divisions (under 14 and 14+). Just a thought. Thursday might be tough because of Friday school. Could also run Friday in parallel with doubles but that gets stressful. We have found that Sunday starting about an hour after main event matches works best.

Feel free to call me if you want to discuss further. Happy to share information and ideas.

What if you guys do a point-spot event similar to the GoalGrinder 500?
