Since SRO is closing, you may want to take down or alter the front page of AHW, as well as here.

Air Hockey Community...

Today we have some bad news. After 5 years as our home for Air Hockey in Houston, SRO Sports Bar is closing their doors. Unfortunately, we were given no advanced notice. In fact, none of their employees or lower management even knew about it. Today, the doors will be locked. At the moment, we are scrambling to get our tables, computer and other assets out.

While this is definitely a setback for our weekly events, it's certainly not the end of the world. Going back decades, every location we've had for weekly Air Hockey in Houston has been better than the last. While SRO was certainly the best yet, I'm confident we will land in a much better place that we can call home.

Unfortunately, this sudden news also impacts the 2013 World Championship event series that is scheduled for July 11 - 14. All of us at WCAH were actually in the process of preparing a contingency plan... just in case. The blessing is that this happened now... 5 months before the event. Sure, I wish we knew 2 weeks ago before we announced the WC. However, if this news hit us in June or July, it would have been much worse.
We are working all angles of our contingency plan and will soon have an alternate venue announced for the 2013 World Championship. While we have no intention of changing the dates from July 11 -14, we do have to try and remain flexible for the right venue.

At this point, please refrain from making any non-refundable or non-transferable travel arrangements. We will be in constant communication with the players and will have an alternate location set up and announced as soon as possible.

Thanks for your understanding.

Andrew Flanagan

Understood, but not everybody reads the forums. The front page of the website is what needed alteration, with SRO being taken out, which has now been done.

So, are these still the correct dates?

Update:

Andrew is working with a potential location right now to try to lock down the WC. I know he plans to try to get the same dates. If not, it will be very close. Still not locked up, so please no purchases yet. But keep your fingers crossed and say some prayers.

Update:

The team has tried several locations, but we just haven't been able to find a place that worked out on all accounts. We have one final location that we are working on right now and are hopeful that this one will work out. We expect to make a final decision by next Wednesday. Either we will move forward with this location or officially cancel the Houston series.

Thanks,

Brian Accrocco

Players - After a long search for a suitable venue, unfortunately we have to officially pull the plug on the 2013 WCAH Event Series in Houston. There are a lot of factors at play... but it mainly boils down to money. We had a few promising venues that just didn't work out.

Our relationship with SRO was a good one. The revenues we brought in as a group throughout the year, justified their venue sponsorship for the major events we hosted there. That space was valuable. Now, starting over, we don't have that revenue stream, cash in the bank or sponsor support to be able to cover the cost of a suitable venue with all the basic amenities needed to run a major event for 100+ players and spectators.

I regret that it has taken this long to make an "official" decision, leaving the players on the hook waiting for information. A couple of possibilities came up at the last minute and we owed it to ourselves to see it through the negotiations. Unfortunately, those venues did not work out.

So, instead of scrambling to throw something together... we are going to take some time to build something new. Something bigger and better than what it was before. WCAH is looking forward to more amazing events in the near future. Stay tuned...

Play Puck!

Andrew and all team members,

I know it is disappointing to have to cancel a great plan, but I know that you will find a way to do bigger and better things in the future, and soon.

For now, it is crucial that we have a World Championship this year somewhere. USAA has always tried to schedule two such major events per year (World/National). That is our mandate.

I understand that Chicago may provide the 2013 World Event soon.

Let's hammer out that plan and make it come to life!

We are still on track to do a Nationals/Worlds in October at the Brunswick Zone in Naperville, IL, as originally conceived by Billy and Goran. The target weekend is the weekend of Oct. 19-20. Nothing is confirmed at this point.

There has been some discussion about moving up the date of a Chicago Worlds if the Houston event fell through, but as Andrew says, it's hard to get something together only a couple months in advance, and do it the way you'd like to see it done. Scheduling can also be an issue for busy venues.

I just spoke to a manager at the Naperville Brunswick Zone and he says the new Gold Standard AH tables (which we sent there right before the IL State) are getting a lot of play and playing great. By October I expect we will have more broken-in tables to provide to a Nationals.

Well, as you say that it "mainly boils down to money", maybe you can start going back to running tournaments for the love and betterment of the sport instead of trying to cash in on what little money the players and sport has. It doesnt take that much to rent out some sort of room at a decent venue. California and Illinois did it recently, and the tournaments looked nice, and gave payouts too. Kudos to them on their hard work and vision for the sport, and making it happen, instead of focusing all on the "money" factor for why it wont happen. As well, many of you should be ashamed of all your criticisms you shelled out toward Michael Rosen and his hard work and selflessness and with helping people attend all these years in Vegas. Im really sorry the Mecca of airhockey, Houston, couldnt find the money to rent out a room in somewhere like Dave and Busters and throw a tournament that they'd been scheduling the last few months on this site.

Hey Jason, since its all about "money" maybe UNAP could use your kind help again in making the tourament happen like with a few years ago. Then again, maybe you know better now. ;)

you really should stop being so single minded.

I was already on board as a sponsor (so again you don't know what you are talking about and your bias against anything Brian/UNAP/Houston is showing). It wasn't about profits for the tournament which is what you were thinking as evident by your response. It was about being able to put on a event that is up to par of what has been put on in the past.

I am unable to host an October Nationals in Chicago. I'm working with the group and Brunswick to see if a July Nationals is possible. If someone else (Mark Maybe) would like to run a nationals in October, they should let there plans be known. I will find out within a week if I can secure a location and tables for a July event. Chris Green has also offered to host a Labor day Nationals. It is the responsibility of the USAA to make sure a nationals happens every year. Waiting until October and relying on Brunswick is not a safe bet.

Nizzi do us all a favor, disappear will ya.

You have so much hatred for Brian because of your friendship with Rosen, it really affecting your mental state. You don't know anything about what it takes to run a tournament. esp a major like the WORLDS.

You also have the nerve to accuse him of "taking what little the players have", oh that's so rich. whatever money we get from the players, goes towards the payout, with 10$ of it going to the USAA sancenting fees.

So Nizzi here some advice, get some help for starters. also when there another tournament in Houston of any kind, just do the same thing you did last year. STAY HOME!!!!

So Jason, whats the problem then? I dont understand where youre getting at with your response. You cant rent out some facility, and put on a good tournament there too? Whys it supposedly all about money now? Hows it different from the past? What does it take then? Im just not buying it.
Brian, Jesus loves you too. Maybe one day you'll know him. :)
And Marc, you poor guy, i was in Houston for last years tournament, dont you remember? Perhaps you dont want to remember that " awesome" emmotional tournament experience where you were getting viciously barked at (as were many others), by Brain. Oh well, he does have the self proclaimed, "Best system ever".
And not true, i dont hate Brian. He just needs some good calling out on some things, as well as he and a few select others needs to lay off on criticising others for their promotional work. You guys, especially now, have no room to talk.
