Proairhockey.com is hosting this state level event in February 2013 (exact date to come after we're sure we'll have USAA approval). My understanding is that state tournaments are USAA sanctioned by default as long as they follow USAA rules and protocol. This tournament will follow all USAA rules and i'm just wondering if there is anything else we need to be aware of or do to have our tournament sanctioned.

Awesome!

Ensuring that tables meet the USAA guidelines is one of the biggest sticking points for state tournaments to be sanctioned. I don't think that anything else needs to be done to be approved by the USAA. Mark and Phil would be the best sources for this info.

Great! It was long since CA didn't host a state championship, isn't it?

De facto sanctioning applies to state tournaments as long as they follow USAA rules/procedures and are on sanctioned tables. The only time USAA would step in is if rival groups wanted to hold the official state tournament, or, if there were complaints to USAA that the tournament was not following USAA rules, etc.

Excellent news about California have a State Tournament in 2013.

What city do you anticipate it will be held?

Hi Air Hockey friends! I have been working hard the past two months to pull this event together. The idea came from all of you. Many people that have I met at the tournaments suggest that I host one for California. I was inspired to bring Air Hockey greatness to my town! We hope to see many familiar faces and meet new players at the California State Air Hockey Championships!

This is the first tournament we have hosted and are in the process of seeking cash sponsors. If anyone would like be a sponsor for our event or have any ideas or suggestions in regards to getting sponsors please email me at kim@proairhockey.com

I am working with hotels in the "Hotel Circle" area near Dave and Buster's in the Mission Valley area of San Diego to accommodate out of town guests. Details to come.

Counting the days until February 23! See you all Soon!

Kim

Things are looking great for our tournament! Everyone is excited and my only concern is that 50 spots won't be enough. If it goes off that big we'll make sure to more than double that next year. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for tournament signup. Shooting for Dec 1st. More to come!

That is awesome to hear that you are holding a CA State tourny. How many tables are you planning to have and are they all PRO Style? Also, I am assuming it will be a 4 of 7?

I saw that 1st place is guaranteed $500. How many places are you planning to pay out if you get all 50 players?

And what are the entry fees?

Thanks

Hi Syed! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Thanks, we're going to have 7 tables. Most are pro styles and some are Photon etc. Mark Robbins is also most likely sending a Gold Standard games table. The main bracket will be best of 7 but spin-offs likely to be best of 3.

The top 3 places are paying out $500, $100, $50. I really want to make this tournament a hit and get some sponsor recruiting experience under our belts (so far so good!). Then next year if we want to work toward high payouts we can. I really think in the future we can put together a $10,000 purse with some effort. But like I said we really want to get this tourney under our belt for the experience.

In lieu of higher cash payouts we are opting for a deep field of trophies and some really nice player packages. That way even players that don't finish in the money or trophies can get some really nice keepsakes out of this tournament. In the end we really want everyone to enjoy the tourney and feel good about it. If it's a success like we're sure it will be, then in the future maybe we can work on a large cash payout and entice a deep field of talent to compete.

Entry fees will be as follows:
-------------------------
Beginner: $25.00
Novice: $25.00
-------------------------
Amateur: $45.00
Expert: $45.00
-------------------------
Pro: $95.00
Master: $95.00
Grandmaster: $95.00
-------------------------

- Cory

FYI everyone, I apologize for this change but i've been working hard to bring us the best possible exposure and experience for the 2013 California State Air Hockey Championships and I think this will be much better for our event and sport!

Venue address has changed. We are now having the tournament at the Irvine, CA Dave & Busters instead of San Diego.

Dave & Busters
71 Fortune Drive #960 Irvine, CA 92618

This is a much more high profile venue (details to come). For anyone that's already bought plane tickets to San Diego, not a big deal. Irvine is just a short drive up the 5. For people who have not yet bought plane tickets, flying into LAX or John Wayne airport are now the closest options. Recommended hotel(s) to come this weekend. Since my group will be driving up from the San Diego area, anyone that is already flying into San Diego let me know and i'll try to make sure you get a ride up to Irvine.

Any questions, let me know!

Cory and Kim - thank you both for making this happen! I'm sure it's going to be a great event, and I will be doing my very best to make sure I can attend. Two quick questions for you:

1. Is the format of the tournament set in stone? I don't know if you're going to have enough tables available to pull this off, but there hasn't been a Swiss-style event in a while. Going that route would provide even more opportunities for players of all skill levels to play a LOT of Air Hockey that weekend.

2. Aside from recommending the event to our friends, is there anything else we can do to help you from afar?

Also, just a quick note that the "Event Info" link on the website still shows the San Diego address as the tournament venue.

Hi Joe! We really hope to see you (and lots of Bay area players) at the tournament!

1. It's not set in stone. Being our first tournament we've gotten lots of opinions on this. Billy S, Brian A, Q, Mark R and others have helped to break it down for us. With 7 tables we can complete the tournament in 11 hours but may have to do best of 5 in losers bracket and also scale back spin-offs. Never heard of swiss. Where can I get details?

2. Help promote the event for us best you can, Facebook, Twitter etc. I'll also have a printable 8.5x11" flyer you can print and put up in player areas or just hand out.

Changed to Irvine, CA. Phil, we'd love to have you out to play and give the opening speech. If you can't make it, is there any way you could film a 2-3 minute opening speech that we could play at the tournament?

I am working in securing funds for my son and I to attend. Pete Lippincott is driving. We may see if we can organize a caravan of players to drive there. Any Houstonians interested in driving to San Diego for this historic event?

I think Travis may have some details on this (?), but if not, here's a basic breakdown of how Swiss-style events work:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss-system_tournament

The last CA State in 2006 used this format to determine seeding for the Top 16 double-elimination round, but we also only had about 25 players that year. It might not be the best solution for an event approaching 50 players, but I'm sure others who have more experience running these events (Tim Weissman?) could offer some guidance in that regard.

2. Help promote the event for us best you can, Facebook, Twitter etc. I'll also have a printable 8.5x11" flyer you can print and put up in player areas or just hand out.

That would be great! I'll gladly print out and strategically distribute as many as I can.

Any update on the attendance from Houston? At the HCO it sounded like a handful of players from Houston were considering making it out.

I don't know about Houston, but I just bought my ticket the other day so I will definitely be there. Now I just have to hope that my back, shoulder, forearm, wrist, and fingers can hold up for a full day of combat. :p

On a related note to me attending, I could use either a ride from Long Beach airport (arriving at 10:30AM) or a share of some kind back to the airport on Sunday (departing at 7AM). Without either of those, I'll just rent the cheapest car I can find and handle it that way.

Also, while I'm somewhat loathe to ask for a room share (I'm almost afraid I won't wake up on time to make it back to the airport if I sleep at all), but if anyone has space that I can use to crash, I'll pony up some cash for a spot to lay my head for a few hours, anyway.

(worst-case, I suppose I could also just drive the rental back to the airport and sleep in there) :p

I'm getting a room Joe. Were you looking for a place Fri and Sat or are flying in on Sat? I'm probably getting a place in Irvine though since that is where i'm flying from.
