I would like to encourage people to stay active and play challenge matches during our "offseason", so in the spirit of Phil Arnold's "$100 to any traveling player who beats me a challenge match", I am offering up the following FREE ROLL to any player* vs. me in a challenge match:
$250 for each set won after winning one set, plus a $250 bonus for winning the match outright.
Here is the break down:
I win 4-1 or 4-0: $0
I win 4-2: $250
I win 4-3: $500
I lose 4-3, 4-2, 4-1, 4-0: $750 + $250 (win bonus) = $1,000
I will play the highest challenger each challenge period and will mostly likely leave the offer on the table through March 1, 2013 or until someone wins money. Matches will be played at UIC on table 2.
*This offer is open to anyone except Brian Quezada.

I predict Fletcher will need to change his underwear after seeing Billy's post, and that Accrocco will be highly tempted to play. As for me, i'd like to issue the same cash offer to anyone in the sport who can beat me at arm wrestling ,with the exception of Blade. ;)

I will also need to wait until the end of the challenge match period before committing to matches. I might have a few challengers (depending upon interest) and cannot play multiple matches each period.

Excellent Motivation!
I have a conference in Chicago the weekend of Nov 18-20. And can play Monday the 19th. Maybe, Sunday the 18th.
So, I will take that Tiger by the Tail, but with a small edit. I would challenge Billy to make that same, or similar, offer for a match between me and the warrior of his choice, either Q or Dan.
Let' have a north vs South conflict November 19th.
Carolina Phil
My winnings would go to a student scholarship fund and tax-write off for Billy.

Maybe Jose Mora could make a surprise visit to take Billy on, especially after his disappointing finish of 13th in the World Championships. Beating Billy i'm sure would make up for that. :) However, i do not think Jose should be too disappointed in his placing at the last WC's. Consider this, there have been several Airhockey champions who have finished 13th AFTER they won a national or world championships tournament ( Wil Upchurch in '98, Jesse Douty in '99, Owen Giraldo in '00, Tim Weissman in '04, Mark Robbins in '10,) with now Jose Mora in 2012.
There is nobody in the Airhockey world right now that i would favor to beat Billy, but an in practice Mora would have a decent chance.
So who will rise up to take on the Dark Knight Stubbs? :)

But, seriously, if no one from out of Illinois steps up to the plate and accepts Billy's generous offer, then I will ride to the sound of the guns and play Billy that 19th or 20th for Number One in the World.

Don't forget Tim Weissman put Billy in the loser's bracket of the 2012 WC. Maybe he'll take the bait? That would be a great match to see.

For even as great as Tim is playing right now, i would not favor him going to Chicago and defeating Billy right now. He like Jose would have a decent chance though.

This is great. Except for the part about not being eligible. Maybe I'll change my name. Currently...
Based on this: "I will play the highest challenger each challenge period and will mostly likely leave the offer on the table through March 1, 2013 or until someone wins money. Matches will be played at UIC on table 2."
September priority: None
October Priority: (challenge by 9/15) Goran (8/22 challenge issued)
November Priority: (tentative. challenge required between 9/16 thru 10/15)) Phil
(I'll update this post as/if it changes)

Nice promo Billy. Wow! Your own money on the line and nothing to gain personally. You inspire those players who are willing to travel and try to grab the brass ring off of you if they dare.
Wish I was in airhockey shape... would stand in line and give it a shot.
Best of luck to all those who go to Chicago. Go for the gusto!

I think Andrew should make a shirt for Billy that says "Don't PUCK with me, I'm Billy Stubbs" for him to wear against anyone that challenges him.

I will take Nizzi's challenge, :)
As far as Billy's challenge, pure greatness from a Great Champion! Tim, increase it 5x? Come on Bro! My first tourney I went to was the first year you won a championship although I'm not on record lol. I came all the way from Lubbock and was sent back to West Texas with w big taste of reality. I have much respect for you Tim and I personally feel you should be all over this.
Again, Billy, this just goes along with all the work and passion you are putting into the sport Kudos and Much respect! - Chuck Forrest

Is anyone (besides Carolina Phil) going to step up to this challenge? Has Billy gotten so good that pretty much everyone else is like..."Ehhhh.....thanks but no thanks." ?
Tim, it would be awesome to see you go over and challenge Mr. Stubbs. If I recall correctly, after Billy won his first World title, Weissman challenged him, went over to Chicago, and defeated Billy 16-1. That shows you all how amazing Tims capabilities were/are.
Billy is playing super amazing now. It would be great to see a couple of my air hockey heroes square off in an epic battle.

What about you Nizzi?
Danny, Ehab, Davis, and Jose seem to be busy with family/work and are really not motivated enough.
Tim is also busy with family and Billy and Tim are too close friends for Tim to try to dethrone Billy.
Brian, Keith, Wil seem to be not at the same level as Billy yet.
Players in the rankings/ratings 11-20 are not the same level as Billy yet.
That leaves you and you are a very good challenge match player. So study some film, practice and go play Billy. :)

Me???....Muah??? Do you think the BELUGA could be up for the challenge...of taking on THEE GREAT STUBBS?? I must admit...I haven't really given it much consideration, but now that I REALIZE a large portion of thee Airhockey WORLD is completely behind me (and you Syed are a large portion;))...I must say I'm a little tempted. lol
.....Ehhhhhh.... I've been too immersed lately in biblical studies and conspiracy theories, to pay Airhockey any attention and challenge someone like Billy or Ehab again. Also, I don't think anyone on the list of people you named will take 2 sets off of Billy in a challenge match right now, except maybe Tim. It's possible of course, but Billys playing so well. Fletchers been a pain in Billy's side at times, so you never know, but Fletcher I highly doubt would make a trip out to play him.
What about you Syed, are you challenging up any time soon?

The only 2 players that have recently given Billy a challenge are Tim and Travis Luscombe. If Travis actually got in playing shape, he may be the answer to the question. Plus he's younger than all the players listed. What about it Travis???? Put your keyboard away for awhile, put the goalie gloves in the closet and go for the gold????

Nizzi
Yes, Brian A. and I are playing a match on Oct. 6.
Mike:
The only way Travis has a chance against Billy is if he plays slow, deliberate, takes 8 seconds per shot, and hypnotizes Billy into a deep sleep. Wait a minute...I just described Travis' play. :)
Seriously, Billy now knows Travis' game and Travis would not get a set. Maybe a few close sets, but not any winning ones.

Eh, Mr. Nizzi, that wouldn't be possible, since I doubt Billy had ever been to Chicago at that point. :) But Tim DID go to Georgia and take back the #1 Ranking from Billy. Tim had a nasty habit back then of crushing anyone who won a Nationals or held the #1 ranking.

What?!? "Too close friends" for Tim to try and dethrone him? Syed, that sentiment is downright "un-airhockeyan", as like "un-American".
Friendship never stopped Tim from stripping the #1 Ranking from me in '95, after I had the audacity to knock him out of the Nationals and beat Owen for #1. It never stopped me from taking the #1 Ranking from Bob Dubuisson, and vice-versa.
It doesn't stop Danny from trying to demolish Ehab every time they play, and vice-versa. It doesn't stop me and Phil from having a non-ending series of battles to the death, going back to 1975.
No, you OWE it to your friends to challenge them, give them your best, put them to the wall, and demand that they dig deep and meet the challenge. That's true friendship - AH style.
