Can someone please post the information for the online streaming. Where can it be accessed, what do people have to go through, what times will matches be shown and is there a process for determining which matches are shown, etc.? Some folks would like to watch, so I'd like an info sheet to give them.

Thanks!

I believe John Mitchell has a clause in his contract that states every single one of his matches will be streamed.

absolute truth ... other than the part about the contract. no need for details like that to get in the way ... even though john has no involvement whatsoever in this tournament (and volunteered in the last one with NO contract) to do this work ... ONLY his matches will be brodacasted. he was so intense in vegas that even when he had NO control over the cameras, the tournament directors took advantage of every available opportunity possible to brodcast him. nothing more in houston will be shown other than john. what would be the point ?

i talked to john last night ... who is arriving about now in houston. i had no idea why flanagan said such odd things ... so i asked. i only watched sunday's events on the stream, (for the most part) ... so i only remember seeing john once. i had no idea why andrew made such comments ... as it turned out ... on saturday all of his matches were called on table one by total coincidence.

john isn't a spotlight seeker, and i know how little to no practice he was in. i imagine that being on camera likely annoyed him to no end. there was NO intervention that made it happen ... that is a fact.

so my suggesstion is that now that this feature is becoming ever more the standard in our professionally run tournaments ... that some serious forethought be given as to which matches appear on the featered table or tables. for john ... it was random and a bit annoying ...

obviously the most important matches should be featured and with commentary. how to schedule this needs to be considered for the sport.

All of Donovan's streaming on tables 1 and 2 will be available at http://live.protablesports.com. I don't think there's a set schedule of who will be playing on those tables, but we have always made a point to try and play marquee matchups on those tables whenever possible.

I wanted to post this in AHW but the thread was closed so I will post it here.

You may be surprised to know that we made several announcements for commentators. I even went around trying to find people willing to commentate. Not as easy to find as you might think. Watching the match from a laptop when you could be sitting table side is a big sacrifice.

I understand where you are coming from and don't think you are complaining. And you are right we had over 100 players here. But I stress the word players! They were focused on their matches which due to the quality of players we had were very, very tough matches.

I believe we all see the value in the stream and the commentating along with that. However, being tied to a laptop is not a fun way to hang with friends we don't get to see as often as we would like. There is only one tournament a year of this size and everyone there wants to enjoy it and spend time on the table and with players.

Many of the best commentators were competitors or coaching. And as Chris pointed out and you acknowledged we were not just going to let anyone get on the mic.

James Scott Britton:
thank you Donovan for this. what shocked me was just how quickly my opinion was blown off. as stated, I feel very strongly about this issue, and the first day of singles is of course when the largest audience of the general public will tune in. it is only the players that know that Sunday is the more important day.

James Scott Britton: now where in the world did Brian come up with this number of 30,000 ?

James Scott Britton: we would definitely be on ESPN with even a hint of evidence with that number ...

James Scott Britton: ‎"funny" how a thread suddenly gets locked with very polite and passionate discussion taking place... I was right and will not back down, but again thank you Donovan.

Donovan L Brown: We did have over 30,000 views Sunday alone! We had at one time as many as 300 active viewers. Brian's numbers are right. UStream put us on the front page thanks to Christopher, so everyone that visited the site on Sunday got to view the event. That is where the 30,000 views comes from and many stayed around and tuned in for a bit.

Wil Upchurch:
JSB, I didn't see the thread you are talking about, but the number of viewers was 30,000 over the course of the weekend. Syncing up commentary with streaming is not an easy task, and with no guidelines in place I've heard that the job was well done this time around. I, and perhaps some others, will be working on guidelines for commentary that can be tested and refined over the coming year. I'm excited about the potential impact of commentary and will be devoting my time to it. I had planned to do more commentary, but that was because I didn't expect to be playing so far into Sunday. I was too tired to do the semis and finals, and I'd much rather have no commentary than bad commentary.

Donovan L Brown: yeah and I was confused why the thread was closed as well. very strange. I stay out of the forums because of the nonsense that is allowed to go on way too long and this got stopped? confused.

Christopher Lee:
‎30,000 was not the whole weekend, that is just Sunday. You are completely wrong James, everyone knew about Sunday because that's when we wanted them to watch. In order to put our best foot forward, we specifically advertised Sunday only
on Ustream because we wanted viewers to see the top tier matches. I have the actual report from Ustream showing over 30,000 viewers, over 24,000 unique viewers, and over 2,000 of actual viewing hours logged. We made it a point to have the scoring and commentary available for almost the whole day Sunday because that's when we knew we would have advertising help from Ustream.

James Scott Britton: thanks you for these comments. i have never been so overjoyed to be wrong.

James Scott Britton: the only numbers i saw were the active numbers watching at the time. perhaps we can monitor the chat a bit more professionally as well.

Christopher Lee: The chat room for the main table was monitored the best we could however there were almost never more than 15 people in there because most people were watching from the front page of Ustream and not from within the channel.

Wil Upchurch:
JSB, that's something we wanted to do, but it required three computers and there was limited space and capacity. Also, when I did see the chat and try to interact with it, there was nothing coming from the spectators, so there were efforts made. I've been interviewing people, pros and newcomers alike, about their experience with the stream and the commentary to determine what we need to do to reach out to new fans and make the sport understandable and exciting. This is a really fun project, but it's going to take a while to do correctly. Luckily, there are people who know how to do these things correctly now. ;)

there were some incredible lies told in the chat at the end of the tournament.

Christopher Lee about what?

James Scott Britton: me.

Christopher Lee: sorry, didn't see those. I will say I didn't look at the chat after the finals were done

james scott britton: it was during and before the finals. a friend of mine from asheville sent me some (cut and pastes)

james scott britton: we have a couple of very pathetic people among us, and do not confuse that with passionate.

"I was right and will not back down" ... this previous comment had nothing to do with the numbers by the way ... only my opinion of the importance of having either the mic simply left on even without a commentator at the table, or a actually having a commentator for the general public's enjoyment.

table one usually had the mic left off so that not even the pucks and excitement could be heard.

I'm not sure what was going on with the mic on table 1 on Saturday. It looks like there were issues in the beginning but starting 3 minutes into the recording Don James is commentating. Here is the link to the recording for Saturday.

Never mind, I did find some stretches where the audio was off. Not sure why that happened. I'm thinking maybe when we didn't have a commentator they turned the mics down so they wouldn't get random noise from behind the commentating area and it might have been linked to the mics by the table too.

I've unlocked the other thread, although it's kind of a moot point at this point. It had previously been locked by another moderator.

I am definitely open to having someone with more patience and free time than I have assist in moderating the forums. I cannot be on here 24/7 to monitor all the nonsense. My attention over the next few weeks will be focused on getting the ratings and match scores updated, the USAA documents updated, preparing for the next EVP, and updating the design of the website with Billy's help. I don't really have time to do all that AND play forum police.
