AH Community,

The Preregistration for the 2012 UNAP Airhockey World Championships has been completed. We have had tremendous success, acquiring 66 players for Open Singles alone. Our primary goal this year is to fill the completed 128 bracket for Open Singles. We are more than half way there thanks to our dedicated players from Houston and abroad including 5 Venezuelans who are booked and ready to come show us all that the best Airhockey is still South of the Equator. And make no mistake - we will achieve this goal. That is how we roll.

Regular registration is now in full swing. If you mean to attend, I do encourage you to complete the registration by July 19, as the late registration rates go into effect on July 20, and that is $185 for Professionals and Masters and $85 for amateurs. If you really want to wait and then pay more, we appreciate your generosity.

Another goal is to max out the Goal Grinder 500 event with 64 players. We are current at 24 paid players, and I know of at least another 25+ for sure just from Houston alone. This event will pay to the top 5-7, and first place gets a whopping $500 prize. And it is point spotted. If you really want to wait, be my guest.

Our team will be calling every player we have information for to let them all know and fill these spots as quickly as we can. And when they are full - they are full. When all 64 doubles spots, 64 GG500 spots and 128 Open Singles spots are filled, that's all she wrote. If you waited, you miss out. We want all of the serious dedicated players to register and be guaranteed entry. Your participation adds to the notoriety of the event for us all.

Are you really going to skip another well planned and well executed UNAP production? Are you going to let another year go by in your life as you pass up a golden opportunity to advance your Airhockey career? Are you going to sit at home and experience regret on Sunday, as you watch all of the other serious players battling out the final matches? (Trust me - I felt this sting all too well just a few weeks ago. It bites.)

I can say from my own 39.5 years of life experience that the greatest regrets I have in life are those opportunities I passed up by my own choice. Think about it. Make the decision. I promise you. You won't be sorry. Our team is among the finest human beings I have ever know, dedicated to putting on the most exciting, technology advanced, and intense event the world has ever known!

Very exciting to see Jose and Pedro back in the same tournament. This could be the last time that this happens!

Thanks for the post, Brian. One minor nitpick though; I believe Venezuela is just North of the equator, though it might as well be right on it.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dionisio as he 4-0'd me last year in Vegas. Broadcasted on the Internet no less. :)

I don't want to put any words in anyone's mouth... (this isn't my tourney and I didn't make the distinction). But if I had to guess, it's because you haven't been to a major tournament yet. You're always going to start out as a novice. It won't mean that you can't finish #1... but I don't think Brian is going to force you to fork over the higher entry fee.

Honestly - enjoy it. Once you finish this tournament, we (as a community) will know how to rate you next time much more accurately.

Ben,

As indicated, we always start new players as Novices unless we have a reason to think they are playing at a higher level. This makes it fair for you in paying a lower entry fee and fair for the experienced players who have earned the higher seeds. 95% of the time this is accurate. Everyt now and then we will have players who are natural Amateurs. We never have had somebody completely unknown who operates at the professional level or higher. Now back in 1995 when Jose MOra from Venezuela made his first appearance at a World Championship, he finished 5th. But he had been playing regularly in Venezuela for 2 years and was their top player. He was already rated as a professional when he arrived, so this is not the same as somebody that we haver never met.

For the rest fo the community, Ben is a 14-year old whose father, Martin, is bringing him and his younger brother, Felix, all the way from Seattle to compete in the World CHampionships. Ben is signed up for all 4 events. We look forward to welcoming our newest airhockey enthusiast.

As of July 11, 2012, we are at 80 registered players in singles, 45 in doubles, 46 in Goal Grinder and 20 in Youth. We still have a lot of people who have said they will play but are dragging their feet about registering, and we have a lot fo people who are still trying to decide. I do expect to close out all 64 seeds in the Goal Grinder. I think once all regular airhockey players have registered for singles we'll be in the mid to high 90's and, if the fliers and social network marketing works, we may get 10-30 newbies on the weekend of. DOubles should end up around 30-35 teams. I think we'll have 30 something young players depending on how effective our youth campaigns have been. I will post the curren tparticipants in subsequent posts.

The great Wil Upchurch has joined the tournament and has guaranteed me that this will be his 3rd singles World Title. He has also agreed to team up with young novice Austin Fernandes for doubles. Austin told me that he would only play doubles if he could get a "good" partner. I suspect Wil qualified. ;)

I also hear that Dave Parmley and David Huynh from central Cali are planning to attend and will register. Looking forward to having these great players participating in our event.

Last I heard Mark Nizzi was still planning to play with Davis for doubles and was still on the fence for singles. Mark has a truly amazing style of airhockey that is both exciting to play and watch. I hope that he decides to bring it and take his shot at the title.

We are at 82 in singles with 10 "Probables" and still a lot of maybes. Goal Grinder is at 52 with only 12 spots left. I predict that will be sold out by the SUnday before the event. Doubles is at 48 (24 teams), and thta will probably grow to 30-somthing total. I think we will make it into the 30's in Youth, possibly the 40's if we get some response to some of the marketing we have done. Under 2 weeks. I hope you are as excited as I am!

Registration metrics update:

Open Singles: 94 / spots remaining: 34 (Max 128)
Power Doubles: 56 / Spots remaining: 40 (Max 96)
GoalGrinder 500: 61 / Spots remaining: 3 (Max 64)
Youth Championships: 28 / Spots reamining: 44 (Max 72)

When an event reaches capacity, we will start a waiting list of players which we will maintain. If any player drops out or is not presenbt for check-in (To be released later today in a new policies thread), we will add players to the respective event based on waiting list order which is prioritzed in orde rof time of request.

Only 3 spots left in GG500. If you want to be a part of this historic event - hurry!

I just received word that John Mitchell, Blade Brown, and Blade's girlfriend are road tripping it to H-town for the WC. That puts us at 97 with still several more on the fence. The record of 116 is looking like it may go down and our dream of closing a 128 tournament is within reach. May God bless us with a plethora of newbies!

We are less than 27 hours from the end of regular registration. The prices jump up after that. Significantly for pros going from $125 to $185 and from $60 to $85 for amateurs for singles. Doubles and Youth also jump $5.

Any of you pros/masters and amateurs/experts that have been holding out, if you wait any longer, you'll be helping to grow that prize fund even more!

Seriously. We want people to register early. We are following practices used by other sports and even non sporting events. When you register early, it gives us capital to use to purchase the materials for a tournament such as the shirts and trophies. It also allows us to gauge how many players we will have so we can calculate how many tables are needed, how many trophies to order, how much budget we will have so we know if we can afford to run ads or go nuts with the trophies or order extra shirst to sell.

We prefer that players register early because of the advantage in knowing resources, and that is why we offer those of you that were willing to commit you dollars early a break.

So if you have been thinking about it. If you are still not sure. Think about this:

Top 10 of top 12 players are registered. 83 1/3% of the "Masters"
25 of the top 30 are registered 83 1/3% of top 30
44 players registered at "Professional" level.
The GoalGrinder event - that we said had only 64 players and people said" oh you'll get maybe 30 people for that - IS SOLD OUT and has a waiting list!

Ask yourself this. When you stand before God reviewing the actions of your life, do you want to say "I attended the greatest airhockey world championship of all time and I was a better man for it", or would you rather dish up the 10 excuses why you didn't?

Excellent news! Former Master Anton Mawhood has decided to throw his hat into the ring. His registration into singles makes #99. Just 1 more registant and we hit 100 for the fourth year in a row. 29 to go to close out the tournament. I received word about a large group of 10+ that may be coming the day of. There are a bunch of other Maybes that I am sure won't be able to resist and will come out and play. If this group comes, we are 16-18 from a sellout. That is within reach. Please, if you know of any players who are on the fence, ask them to come. To be able to sell out singles is an achievement that we can all share and will take us all to make happen. We have done everything we can with what we have available to us to market and exposure. We need your help to finish the job.

Yes. As indicated in the main thread "2012 UNAP World Championships" posted on April 2 by Travis Luscombe, (http://airhockeyworld.com/forummessages.asp?forum=11&thread=1158&page=1) late registration runs up to the event date.

The original reasoning for the cut off was preparation time and allow players the opportunity to calulate match-ups and prepare with a few days notice as well as reduce tardiness of start time due to timely process for calculating seeds. We reverted back to allowing sign up for each event up to the event date this year to test to see if using ratings is indeed more fficient and to maximize participation by allowing signups until the final hour. It is more expensive, especially for professionals which is by design, as we wanted early commitment from Masters, Pros, Experts, and Amateurs and so we offered cheaper rates for the early and regular registration in exchange for commitment.

Cut off for open singles is Saturday morning at 10 am. We start at 11 sharp. That gives us one hour to identify the ratings of each participant, determine the ordering (much easier than the complex ranking calculation method) and then fill out the chart. We have the best team in the world, and I am confident we can do it.
