I officially challenge Q and Dan Meyer to matches over presidents day weekend, Feb 17-20. I will most likely fly in Friday night and play matches Saturday and Sunday and leave on Monday. I can also play earlier on Monday and schedule a later flight home if that works better for anyone. Q beat me in a challenge match here on my home court and Dan beat me in my first match in Vegas last year so I'm making this my revenge tour. If either of you cannot play then Goran is my next choice (just don't think I could hold up for 3 matches) Once I can get confirmation of at least two matches I will book my flight.

Ideally, I would like to play Q on Saturday and Dan on Sunday/Monday.

Charge on, brave Chris, charge on!

"Charge of the Light Brigade" isn't really the most encouraging work to quote, is it?

I'm Eric Rood and, luckily, you're not.

This is probably chris's best chance at getting a master level ranking in a long time. However I predict Q. wins 4-1 and Dan to win 4-2.

Good luck Chris.
The secret lies in an eye for locality, and in not letting the right moment slip. Thus Wu Tzu says: 'With a superior force, make for easy ground; with an inferior one, make for difficult ground.'"

No, but it gives glory to Chris's Chicago Charge.

Let's get some predictions going for Chris Lee's matches vs. Dan Meyer and Brian Quezada that are happening this weekend in Chicago.

I have not seen Chris play since the last nationals, so I am not exactly sure what shape his game's in. I'll assume he's playing a little better than the last time I saw him. I do know that Q is playing much better than he was a year ago. Dan's game has also improved especially when he has his mental game under control.

Before the predictions, let's look at the history between these players:

Dan defeated Chris in the 2011 Vegas Worlds 4-3 after being down 0-2:
http://www.airhockeyworld.com/match.asp?matchid=21632

Brian defeated Chris in a challenge match in CO in May of 2011 4-3 after being down 0-2.
http://www.airhockeyworld.com/match.asp?matchid=21112

MY PREDICTIONS

Chris vs. Dan: Saturday UIC, 4:00pm

Dan over Chris 4-2 sets, 21-15 games

I think Dan will come out strong against Chris. Chris will then adjust and it'll be a grind from the mid-point of the match on.

Chris vs. Q: Sunday UIC, 4:00pm

Q over Chris 4-0 sets, 16-7 games

Q is just playing too good for this to be a close match. Q may lose a few games early on as he gets a read on Chris, after that I see Q running away with it.

I'm looking forward to watching these matches. Good luck to everyone playing.

I'm glad you enjoy the videos. The better you play me, the more experience I'll garner from playing you.

Looking forward to the match.

Q is playing high-level air-hockey right now. He is a huge favorite versus Chris. 4-0, 16-2.

Dan is susceptible to an upset but he is also the favorite here and as ususal I will side with the favorite. Dan 4-2, 21-11.

The only "logic" behind these predictions is that I have played all 3 in the past 2 years and from what I can re-assemble in my mind, that is where the predictions came from.

Looks like the mysterious X Factor is kicking in with Chris taking the first set! Meyer on paper comes into the match ahead in rating points and in ranking position. But how do you factor in the extra human desire to win that comes from going to the trouble to pay for a ticket, fly in a plane, and hot personal urge to prove the "pundits" wrong about your losing?

Is this X Factor enough to overcome the numbers?

Or, will the measured superiority of Meyer inevitably and irresistably gain game by game and set by set to bring the results back into the quantifiable world where numbers trump heart? Meyer is on track in the second set to make the numbers work. The ah world is watching!

Good luck and skill to both combatants!

Congrats to Meyer for beating down a bold attack by Lee. And, like Shakira sings, "Stats don't lie!"

It was Dan who did the adjusting in this match, not Chris as I predicted.

Chris had good puck control and played at a consistent level throughout the match, but after the first set Dan had the winning formula: RWUs and crosses, complimented with cuts, 1-2s and forehand unders. Dan made nice defensive adjustments over the course of 5 sets. Good job Dan!

Love the link Phil :)

It's always an honor to have someone come into your city to play you. I hope Chris makes it out again in the future.

The first set, I felt like it was just really close. Chris came out from behind and had a shot that he could go to early. I had a couple of those moments where it felt like I was getting unlucky. You know those times when you catch the defense out by the line and you're shooting a transition shot to an open goal.. and not only do you miss, but it bounces between the corners of the goal for a turnover. These are the things that drive me nuts and Chris just executed better in that first set.

Then, I calmed down and made a couple key defensive adjustments and got Chris jumpy on defense. He got a good read on my cut and rwu and made it hard for me to score... but when I worked in some good offspeed shots and a cross - I think it was too much for Chris to stop and I rolled through for the win. You know something is working when you win 9 games in a row. In the last set, he went a bit in desperation mode and started playing defense with his left hand! And, somehow... he won that first game 7-6 on the backs of some great, great overs.

I don't think I scored a single backhand left wall under - but did manage to get some good overs and some forehand unders to fall. As always... I typically find a way to get my rwu to work - and Chris just got a little too jumpy - which opened up my straights.

Tons of fun - we should have video for this up eventually. Then people can scout Chris!

Congrats to Q for winning his match against Chris Lee, 4-0, 16-4:
http://www.airhockeyworld.com/match.asp?matchid=26447

Chris played well, using good overs that were compliment with a cross out of the circle drift, solid puck control and a well thought out game plan. Chris would have beaten most players at his skill level, but Q is at another level now. Q scored with both unders and straights at will, and Q was the more athletic of the two. If Q was able to make a few stops a game, the game was lopsided in Q's favor.

Thanks for coming out Chris! We'll have to see about putting a trip together to Denver.

Like Dan said, it's always great having someone come into your city to play. Always open to matches when people travel in (When are you coming to town Houston?).

Chris said in one of the threads that he had watched videos in preparing for this match and you could tell from his game plans starting both matches that he did. It's one of the reasons I love putting up videos of our play. Forces analyzing my game, see the weaknesses and try to work on them. From watching the first couple of sets of Chris vs. Dan, I was wondering why there was a relative lack of LWs and from seeing some of his shot selection he went with some of Dan's weaknesses as of last nationals but Dan has adjusted well to those shots since then. Dan's defense played great and made the critical adjustments to stop Chris' attacks during that match.

Going into our match, I expected a much different attack from Chris than he used against Dan if he had watched videos and that's what I got. In game one, Chris used a good combination of LW banks (both unders and overs) to get game 1. I was able to adjust my defense and find my primary attack for the match, based on what I had seen the day before from Dan...a heavy percentage of RWUs with cuts and crosses mixed in. I hit some left walls occasionally to try and catch Chris when he charged. With this combination I was able to win the next 12 games.

Going into set 5, Chris made an offensive change to using primarily right walls in games 2 and 3. Luckily I was able to adjust to force a game 7 after being down 3-0.

Playing two high level matches in a 2 day span is tough and Chris played well in both matches. It was great to play him again and I hope he can make it out again at some point.

Thanks to Chris for making the trip and to the rest of the IL players (esp Billy, Dan, and Goran) for all the training, practice, sets & matches over the past 5 months.

Q

Congrats on your win. My prediction about your match was pretty close. :)
August and I did have some plans to come to Chicago and challenge up, but due to financial reasons, that is not possible at the moment. I am still thinking about it though because:

I want another shot at Goran and I want to know how I would fare against Billy.
If I did come I would definitely play these two and let you and Dan fight for the 3rd match. But like I said, it is on the back-burner right now.

I am not planning to go to the Vegas tournament and if I don't Chicago is a great alternative since I have an offer from Billy to stay at his place (hopefully still standing).

So I will keep you posted.
Congrats again to you and Dan on impressive wins.

Take care.......
Syed

Chris

It is great to see an air-hockey player go to another city to battle it out. Unfortunately, I am sure you are not satisfied with the results. Keep practicing and you will keep improving. Maybe you can come to Houston next time since there are many players here to challenge also.

Take care....

Syed

So after a couple of nights of dreaming about pucks flying into my goal I guess i'm ready to recap my matches.

My match with Dan couldn't have started out better. I came out strong like I wanted to and I followed the game plan that I wanted too. Dan's offense and defense wasn't quite settled in yet. While I knew winning the first set was important, I also knew that it really didn't mean a whole lot about how the rest of the match was going to go. The first set is usually spent getting int a rhythm and figuring out what the other player is trying to do. Dan did exactly that. After the first set, Dan's defense tightened up and once he found a couple of shots that kept dropping he was off to the races. Unfortunately I was unable to make the proper adjustments to stop the bleeding and like Dan said, I got so desperate on defense that I resorted to playing D left handed which led to my first win in a streak of 9 games for Dan. Dan played a great match and it was definitely a learning experience.

My match with Q was almost the same as it was with Dan except Q's adjustments seemed to happen at a much quicker pace. I came out strong executing my game plan and took the first game. Right away Q adjusted to what I was doing and it took me until the 4th set to find a solid 2nd attack which was way too late. The RWO/RWU combination that I used to take 3 straight games would have been very handy to have established early on in the match and would have allowed me to keep Q a little more off balanced. Either way, I still don't think my defense was strong enough to keep up with Q's high powered offense. I might have been able to snag a few more games but I still don't think it would have been enough to beat him.

Overall, it was a great experiences playing these guys. I feel no shame in losing to people that work as hard as the guys in Illinois do. I really appreciate all the feedback I got while I was there and thanks to Billy for going over some of the different types of drills they work on in order to fine tune their skills. Hopefully I can implement some of these drills in Colorado so we can do a better job of making each other better. Thanks to Goran, Billy, Dan, and Q for reffing, playing, and being awesome hosts while I was there. I especially thank Goran and his family for being gracious hosts for my trip. I can't wait to play you guys again and hope I can make it a little more competitive next time.

Oh and Syed....a trip to Houston is definitely not out of the question. Need to spend some time on my game first though.

Hey, I was wondering if the matches between Chris and the Chi-town all-stars was filmed and if it was going to get posted? Also, will the match between Davis and Billy be livestreamed? I would love to see it.

Yes we filmed them. I have a few older matches that I have to get through and edit first. I'll probably skip the scoreboard we did for Danny v. Billy on our Vimeo page to speed up the process slightly. I should have some time after this weekend to get started...gotta try to fill it with AH somehow even if just videos.

As for Billy vs. Davis...it will at minimum be recorded, edited and uploaded after the fact as we have done before. WRT live streaming...we tried it once using a tethered phone to the computer but the quality wasnt great because of low upload speeds from cell service. We do not have access to UIC's internet services (if even available in the location with the tables) unfortunately. I'm looking into a short term CLEAR or other WiMAX service but the speeds appear still to be below a level I would think would provide useful/enjoyable video to people. (We may try it out behind the scenes on Friday or Saturday and see if it works but I'd put it at a really low probability)
