Big D in Big D

This is how air hockey works in Dallas. There is a core crew of 4 who have been coming together on a weekly basis ever since we met at the 2010 Zwack World Air Hockey tourney in Houston. Over the months and now years, we've been able to maintain this routine on a fairly, if not loose, standing, what with familial obligations, occupational priorities and geographical relocating a somewhat reoccurring issue. Never the less, we've stayed true to our weekly air hockey nights for better or worse, branching out as often as we can to play elsewhere throughout the other days of the week whenever possible. The hunt for a new air hockey environment and new air hockey players is a constant. As such, we've seen our core crew of 4 expand with the addition of up and coming players that have begun to threaten the old guard, if you will, with a constantly elevating level of skill on the table. So, with new faces bringing new games, all of us on a constant search to improve, the time couldn't have been better for Danny the Lion King Hynes to pop his mug over to the Green Mansion for a little round robin puck play, something for which we were all incredibly happy, if not humbled, to experience, and to impart a bit of wisdom and enlightenment to we of the Dallas displaced.

No great detail needs divulging, I'm sure any reader of this blog entry can imagine how the games went, but for the Dallas crew, and myself personally, it wasn't so much the hope of defeating the 10 time champ that I looked forward to, though I would be remiss if I didn't admit to one or two tiny delusions of grandeur, it was getting the opportunity to experience the level to which this game can be played, being gratified by the humility of a true champ, and the chance to understand a large piece of this sport's history to which I have never previously sensed first hand. I discovered that playing a champ is not so much a learning experience as playing a sportsman, someone willing to elevate another's play through the patience of time spent, and the sharing of technique, and A LOVE OF THE CRAFT of air hockey, which I would define differently than simply a LOVE OF AIR HOCKEY itself.

So to Danny Hynes, we of Dallas thank you for spending a few hours puck slinging with us, and as the vote has decried, you can come back any time. And please bring Ehab.
