|Long time stranger. Not much to talk about on this side of the world with respect to AH. I'm not keeping up too much lately, but it seems as though everyone is calling the top 4 finishers at the WC and Houston championship, "The New Old Guard". Kinda funny. I guess I am getting pretty old.
#1 Danny - he destroyed me worse than anyone except for Jose in 2005 Colorado State Finals. I was horrible and he was really, really good. Which was strange, because I played really well against him in doubles the night before. Sometimes doubles helps, and in this case it hurt me, because he was able to figure it out after playing me.
I knew I couldn't play any worse against him at the Houston International Championship. First three games he wins 7-6, with me having the puck several times in a few of the games. I'm missing that edge to close out 7-6 games. The edge I had on Danny for a number of years was that I was faster than him on defense and on transition. This is not the case right now, he is dominating me on transition and speed points. As long as he is faster, he will defeat anybody on the planet, because you are not going to beat him with a setup game. I'm coming hard and fast next time against him.
#2 Ehab - starting to feel bad for the guy, he has a case for being one of the top 4 or 5 all time, but our society really only cherishers Championships, we are obsessed with them. He's almost like the Buffalo Bills, making 4 straight SuperBowls and losing them all, except that he's actually won 2. If I can defend him, which is a big if these days, I feel I can beat him.
#3 Billy - He's pretty even with Ehab, we'll see how he fares in their upcoming challenge match. Ehab hasn't played too many challenge matches, but I think he will eventually start shutting Billy down, but you never know. Billy and I are even, whoever is sharper when we play comes out on top. He won all our 7-6 games in our last match because I wasn't sharp.
# Me - I'm pretty much the weakest link of the New Old Guard. Let's see, I think almost everyone who has played me the past two championships has had a match point against me, LOL. Javier, a 33 seed, almost beat me, Auggie, Brian Q. I'm using up a lot of luck and grit just to get by my early round matches, and my forearms aren't cooperating for my later round matches. C'est la vie. I thought about cleaning my table for a few days, but it never happened. I would like to beat Danny again at some point in my life, that would be enjoyable. I guess I'm the new "Andy", get zero practice in because no one is playing in my area, and try to hang on and make top 5. Maybe I can put together some scratch, get motivated, and fly out and play some challenge matches.
