I was wondering how us here in Oregon, with our sole air hockey federation, can have the consideration of best ranked in Oregon? We have a fairly strict rule set that is inspired by the USAA tournament rules.

Generally, we hold a tournament once a week, and the top players of that week accumulate points. I keep all the stats. By the end of the eighth week, the top eight point earners then play in a playoff type championship with top seed vs low in best of seven games until we have a champion. I even was able to get local businesses to sponsor the event and give nice prizes away ect.

Long story short, our first playoffs is in two weeks, and due to the lack of regional tournaments and associations, will the winner of these playoffs be considered the best of Oregon?

You can consider your tournament a state tournament, and the finishes will determine Oregon State ranking. Or you can enter all matches played on this website and it will calculate each players World ranking, which you can also use as state rankings like Illinois does. I perfer the rating system myself. If you have prior match scores, you can email them to me at dcwakidd@aol.com. I will enter them so each player gets rated.

USAA encourages local control as much as possible. Therefore, you can use various procedures of your choice to declare your local champions. Of course, those of us playing for dozens of years have a reservoir of knowledge and experience that we are happy to offer to maximize your success. Goran is a great consultant in this regard.

The USAA concerns are focused on securing that competitive AH is played by our official rules of play. That way AH remains a sport that players around the world can play within the same rules which were developed over the past 40 years by the players themselves. These rules ensure that tournaments and rankings/ratings have a common basis that is coherent and consistent worldwide.

Best,

Phil Arnold
USAA President

Thank you both, and I will follow the USAA rules during all tournaments. You have been very helpful .

I think Goran means World rating, rather than ranking. You all can get a World rating even if you've never played anyone from outside your group. To get a World RANKING, you need to either:

1. Play in a USAA-sanctioned Nationals/Worlds (all players receive a Ranking based on finish), or

2. Win a challenge match against someone who is USAA-Ranked. You then get his ranking spot and he moves down one notch.

See Challenge Match rules on this site for all the details.

I figured since these are the only organized tournaments in Oregon (as far as I know) and we follow strict rules, that the winners of our playoff championships (held every two months) would be a good factor as to who is the best regionally.

Also, I feel having the rankings of the Oregon best player on this website will attract more players from around the state into our tournaments (or at least thats my goal). The business in which the tournaments are held (Level Up Arcade), are fully supportive and want to start promoting our games. They even asked me to be in the city parade representing their company buy having me and another person playing air hockey on a flatbed truck the whole duration of the parade (which I am totally going to do!).

I feel if I can tell Level Up, and our roster of players that our games are now accredited by your ranking system (at least for regional ranks) it would bring a great level of professionalism and seriousness to our sport that is already improving everyday.

I'm very excited to take our local tournaments to that next level.

Sounds good. Send me full names and scores of every match played, and ill enter them for world rating and have Travis create an Oregon state ranking section.

We would also encourage you to try and make it out to the next national tournament in Chicago!
